Howdy all,

Our wee Panda went in for MOT today, whilst there they looked at a little bit of rust on the sump (guard off for a clean up) and obviously looked a little hard as oil started dripping rapidly! But I'm glad it was caught there rather than occurred in a few weeks time when it may have been on a journey and gone unnoticed until noise/damage occurred.

They are going to patch it for now with PetroPatch, but I'll want to replace the sump sooner rather than later as they are known for going through I've read.

I've not looked underneath yet, but the garage have indicated that two of the sump bolts are hidden by the gearbox, so it'll need to be disconnected and moved away from the engine to do the job.

Any advice on a workaround or how to approach the job is appreciated please! I've used the search feature which will often find the info I need, and I'm sure this will have been covered in the past, but I must not be using the right search terms to find the info I need.

Many thanks, Jamie

One thing I am sure about, there isn’t much information on doing this. At one point I was seriously considering doing a cam chain replacement myself. In order to do this, you need to remove the sump so I decided to have a look first to see what needed to be removed. The gearbox doesn’t need to move but the gearbox - engine support does as this goes over the sump. So exhaust off, gearbox support off, sump off. Except… on the Multijet, the gearbox support has a bolt that is occluded by the transfer box and I can see no way to get it out without draining and removing the transfer box first. Prop-shaft as well, of course. Hence I have shelved that idea for the moment.

There may be a way to get that bolt out without removing the transfer box but I have no idea how.
