A new battery hasn’t helped, anyone have any other ideas for ways to fix it that don’t involve considerable amounts of money?
IBS? See if this shows a fault? The battery may be good but the computer says no as getting the incorrect data. Read the codes with MES or similar, then visually check the simple stuff like earth straps, clean and re-torque. Rodent eaten wiring etc. Electrical connectors have all the pins, no corrosion, seals ok, ABS sensors not been decapitated etc.

The difficult is reading this code as it doesn’t appear on cheap OBD readers and I’m wary of spending money to diagnose at a specialist who may do the same thing you say and replace parts one by one.
Take a look on this Forum for the list of people who have access to the Fiat Code reader software, called MultiECUScan, or MES for short. If you can find someone local to you they can read the codes for you. You'll find the list under the 'Directory' heading at the top of every forum page

I have MES on my iPhone (cost £50), along with a plug-in Bluetooth reader that is sold as being 100% reliable on Fiats (and also, as it happens works perfectly on my 2013 LandRover too using the free app that came with the reader). Without access to an accurate code, you're clutching at straws. Caveat: codes don't always pinpoint the fault, but at least will get you looking in the right place.

What reader would be suitable to use with that on a phone?

I ordered from Gendan UK -- the UK agent for the MES software. At the time they recommended one called vLinker MC+, but worth dropping them a line as they might have a newer/better/cheaper option now :) Also you will need an adaptor cable to read some of the codes. The cable 'rewires' the pin-to-pin connections (crosses some and links others) to give access to teh very specific Fiat codes. The 'yellow' adaptor covers most things, but the ABS system may need a different one. See https://www.gendan.co.uk/category_161.html Email them as they are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Note by the way, if you buy the software for a PC it's a lifetime use. The phone app I think has to be renewed annually, but still costs less than getting a dealer to reset things.

Multiecuscan does not have an android app

iPhone is £50 a year or it stops working after a year

You will need an adaptor to read the ABS

The free version that runs on a Windows laptop will not work on you model, you will need the full registered version

There are other software out there, and stand alone units

Software I have tried and know work on a laptop

Delphi with a multiplexer
WoW with a multiplexer
MultiECUscan with an elm and multiplexer

I have had a quick play on

Alfaobd free on an android with a £5 elm327

The free version read the extended OBDII manufacture codes fine

I have not tried accessing the ABS module with it, but other have accessed the ABS on the free version

You will need an adapter also

This is all pretty confusing given how little I know of this, I’m not sure which is the most affordable way of me doing this. If it’s as simple as just an ABS sensor it seems a rather expensive way of doing it.

Start by trying to find a forum member local to you with the MES software. They'll read any codes for you, often for the price of a beer/coffee etc, if you ask them nicely ... Find one listed under Directory (as per previous post).

I can't be 100% it's even an ABS fault

If it was an ABS sensor which one of 4 it is

The wheel speed read using 3 parts per corner sensor, bearing, wiring, that's 12 bits plus the ABS module

I have absolutely nothing to go on, it might well be an ABS sensor, but that would be a pure guess

I do know the computers on the car have detected a problem

I do know its stored that information and displayed a message on the dash

Reading that stored code, is a sensible first step

Controlled, but the basic mechanical design is to suit the overall requirements? So in general rear brakes are lighter ( non vented), or smaller, or not multiple pistons etc?
I am only quoting the owners manual

Has the battery fixed the start stop

Does the change gear lights work, assuming your car has them

How have we tested the brake switch, or has a new on been fitted

Is there any pattern to the when the error occurs

Cold start
Bumpy road
Turning left
When the lights are switched on
Accelerating
Braking
High revs
As examples

There rarely totally random

Which phone android, iphone

Start stop doesn't appear to be working, gear lights do work, brake lights work, swapping switch hasn't changed error. The error comes on as soon as the ignition is on and won't go away.

I've managed to get one of these adapters (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0764CK269) and the free multiecuscan, which supports my car, but I can't get the connection to work, might be a setting I'm missing but it's not the easiest software to use and I can't find any guide to help on it.

Great

That given us some more information

It's failing from power on self test

I thought It was originally random while driving

The car is listed on the free version of the software, it seems only a latency connection issue stopping a scan.

What device can be used with alfaobd? I've tried the app but it seems terrible and picks up lots of "unknown devices" in bluetooth, and won't find the cheap obd reader I do that.

Anything in red is paid only?

Am I looking at it wrong ?

I'm not sure but on the downloaded software the vehicle is listed so I assume it should at least connect, the only issue appears to be this latency error.
If you sort that out you will be no further forward

PLEASE NOTE: The modules in red are NOT supported by the FREE version! You can connect to these modules with the FREE version, but after successful connection the program will only show the Info screen and the following message: FREE VERSION RESTRICTION / This module requires REGISTERED version! / You can run it in 'simulation' (CTRL+F10) mode only!

You can not read the codes

In free version of alfaobd you can read all the modules, but once connected it will time out after 15 minutes, and you will have to start the program again

In device manager is the kkl cable correctly seen

Have you installed the drivers for the cable

I have the same cable it works fine on XP

ABS is listed as free on the page for this car.

I can't tell for certain if the drivers are installed correctly but I believe so, any guides etc online are pretty terrible at explaining this or providing a legitimate source. If it's registering the cable but just failing on latency I'm not sure if this is the driver.

What device can I purchase cheaply to test alfaobd?

There's two cables that look the same

They have different drivers, you need to know which

Did the seller provide a download link

CH341 the led light up when the usb end is plugged in

FTDI the led lights up when the diagnostic ends is plugged in
