Fiat 500 art car by Malangatana - Click for high-res image gallery

The opening of a new car dealership might not be a major event in most places, but in small towns and countries it can be cause for celebration. In the case of the new Fiat and Alfa Romeo dealership in Maputo, Monzambique, the occasion included the unveiling of a hand-painted art car by Malagantana Valente Ngwenya.

Malangatana, as he's known internationally, made a huge mark on Mozambican culture, and has been acknowledged both at home and abroad for his contributions. His works touch on themes as varied as colonization and civil war, romance and the rigors of daily life, and have been displayed worldwide.

Last year, he met with the Ferreira Dos Santos family, which runs a large industrial conglomerate in Mozambique, and agreed to create an art car for an Italian car dealership they were opening in Maputo. Over the course of days, he labored over the Fiat 500 that served as his canvas, and "The Italian Woman" you see here is the final result.

Sadly, Malangatana died shortly after completing the art car and never saw its formal unveiling. It will now be auctioned online at www.sapo.mz, with the proceeds benefiting the Malangatana Foundation to help his needy countrymen.

Wonder how long the waiting list would be for new car if you specified this as an option?

This might also apply to the real McCoy. There's quite a few youtubes on the 500 and Gucci. Looking at the 'brainchild' behind the branding - Lapo Elkann - I'd be careful about any strange remarks. Very well connected if you look him up and has quite an interesting history. There's a youtube of him walking around a Ferrari with what looks like white runners (not this one) - but I reckon there're probably megga expensive so I suppose he can get away with it. I think very few men with go out buying this particular car - I can imagine what people might say - 'I think you left your ******* in the car'. Still, you have to admire the passon of the Italians. All in good taste of course...

YouTube - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Lapo Elkann introduces Fiat 500 by Gucci

If I didn't hate the Gucci 500 already I certainly would after hearing that annoying git and his hair rambling on.

If you are going to hate, then hate with passion RPJ  you have to give it to the Italians for style and passion. This car would fit in Kensington anytime but would look chav elsewhere.

A bit off topic, look for the Clarkson 'Times review' of the 500 whilst he runs through the lyrics of "where do you go to my lovely".

and here it is; http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/jeremy_clarkson/article3504933.ece

OK I need to correct my previous comment:

If I didn't hate the Gucci 500 already I certainly would after hearing that very rich and well connected annoying git and his undoubtedly expensive hair rambling on.

Codswallop. Italian is a beautiful language and one I speak a bit as muy sister is married to a Calabrese and I have spent a lot of time in Calabria, rome and Tuscany. It's not the language, it is him and his accent and his hair - not surprised it turns out he was born in New York.

Just out of interest, has anybody seen one of the byGucci models? I'm intrigued to see one on the road. I'm not overly keen myself on it. Also does anybody know if they still make the pink ones? Or were they a limited edition?

Pink ones were a 'limited' edition with only 500 ? being made. :)

byGucci. Haven't heard from anyone on this forum having seen one in the flesh but I quite liked the model.
Which aspect of the car intrigued you - was it
- the interior ?
- wheels off the 500c ?
- stripes ?
- different coloured dash to the actual colour of the car - works well on the BNW with the white ambiance ?

After posting this I did a bit of Googling (probably should have done that first!ha!) and saw that they only made 500 of the pink ones, there is one in the town where I live and the dealership I have ordered my 500 from have had a few on their forecourt so it's wierd to think there were only 500 made in the world and a few of them have been in little old Cleckheaton. Personally I love the pink! even though my boyfriend and friends think it's vile I think it is unique and so cute. I have been saying a little bit of me wishes I had gone for the pink but looks like I wouldn't have had the choice anyway.

The Gucci model according to the internet doesn't go on sale until July and will only be available to order online which i didn't quite understand  the whole thing intrigues me really, the glittery paint I want to see on an actual car so I can tell if it is much different from the BNW/FW. I don't like the stripes on it. The Ivory leather interior sounded nice but then when I looked on the configurator it has black all over it, had it been JUST ivory leather interior I think that would look gorgeous. The wheels are very nice, I didn't know it had a different coloured dash to the actual colour of the car.

Hopefully someone will post pics on here if they get one!

The last youtube posted got an adverse re-action - hopefully this guy's italian accent is 'right' one. The interior colour according to my better half is very similiar to a handbag that she's got from Gucci ! I didn't spot the glittery colour - I've assumed it will be the BNW or the Metallic black. The wheels on the white one are different than those on the black one. This one shows the interior changes more clearly...

The Fiat configurator says it is 'glittery paint' only in white or black but still glittery. I'll take a look at the video. Thanks.

Some dealers have the cars on display at the mo, I got my OH stop at the one in Sheffield this afternoon so I could have a lookie. The paint is really lovely - very subtle glitter running through but you have to look quite close to see it (they were inside = will probably be more obvious when outside), it reminded me of some of my nail polishes ;). But OMG the rest of the car is so chavvy and just naff looking - the stripe running down the side and the seats are just wrong!!
There was a lovely volare blue pop sitting outside so I got to admire it in the sunlight when we left :D

Thames in Slough have one in the showroom....but no one will look at it as they also have two Abarth 695 Ferrari 500's in there
