Hi, I know this is not a dedicated motorhome site but the cab on my motorhome is a Fiat Ducato.
I have a 2001 Swift Sundance with the Ducato 1.9td engine, the 2nd gear is crunching going up and down gears, I have tried to have it fixed, only to be told by Northwest Transmissions Liverpool, that Fiat don't have any parts for that gearbox as it is obsolete and it is different to the Ducato van.
Does anybody know of any other gearbox ie, Citroen or Peugeot gearboxes that will fit as I need any help you can give me.
Barry.

Is it just the syncro? Some gears and syncros are shared with ulysse, scudo and the 2.5 non turbo would have though a place like that would have a secondhand one to fit.

Hi Bazwald. Gearbox problems seem to be fairly common amongst Fiat van/motorhome owners and the crunching of 1st/2nd gears usually signifies that this is a problem that will only get worse over time. What work have you actually had done? Have you had the gearbox stripped down to identify this problem.? Do you know what type of gearbox you have so you can get the right parts.?
ecunotemu is right in saying that other Fiat models are identical with regard to gearbox parts. Try looking on e-bay at One Stop Gearbox Shop or try Solo Italia Ltd. tel 01865 881010.
If you are looking for a replacement gearbox you have to make sure you get the correct one as the starter motor housing may not be identical to yours.

i have the same motorhome 2001 swift lifesyle 1.9TD the third gear was grinding and i tried to get it repaired under a warranty i bought for 700.00.pounds called customer protect but they said it was not covered because it was fair wear and tear, i drained the gearbox oil and changed it to EP 90-140 which is a really thick oil , now it selects with no problems i m wondering if the recommended oil is too thin, it does seem to be a common problem with this age of vehicle

PS lesson learned dont waste money buying customer protect warrenty , would have been better to have taken 700.00 pounds and threw it out in road, robin

8 years later I have discovered the gearbox is smoother with 75W80 synthetic oil but with this thinner oil you leave little puddles of leakage every road you park

And here we go again? 10 years later, third gear synchro worn out (grinding gear) and now second gear is hard to select, that's after 20,000 carefully driven miles,

Hi robin123, I'm based in Leeds, Yorkshire. We have a gearbox repairer who is well familiar with Fiat gearboxes. If of any use reply. Ian

Hi I am having problems with a 2000 yr fiat duccato 1.9 gear box. It is grinding a bit in all gears but worse 2 to 1. It had water in the gear box fluid when drained plus shards of steel. i am wondering what other vehicles have the same gear box and would be interested in your contact no for the company in leeds.

Caroline

Sorry you have not choice but to have the gearbox rebuild! Other wise the grinding will damage unobtainable components,
The synchro ring is worn and needs to be replaced
This is an easy job and synchro rings can be bought from ebay
I know this as I have ducato 1.9td and have to new all my synchro rings ever 15000 miles

I try and rev match my gearbox when changing gear, I avoid changing down, I pull away gently but the synchro gears have to match wheel speed with engine speed and the weight of the motorhome wears synchro rings out

Fiat used the wrong gearbox for the job (I think it was a Friday afternoon decision) but don't worry about it because the British government will have the old motorhomes off British Road soon?
