Technical Drum brake shoe problem.

I know that feeling too - ensure you leave the car in gear and Face the wheels so it'll roll into the kerb if it does somehow move

But give it a few days - make a habbit of making the rear drums work more
They dont do much work to start with - so applying the handbrake makes them work

If you can - allow it work for you in a safe manor, dont rely on it - be prepared to use the footbrake as you do normally

Been trying with the handbrake, not really stopping the car tho, can hear the shoes rubbing on the drum when I apply it, but not really stopping it

shoes look good
and right for your mk2
you must be doing something wrong as once adjusted up they should work straight away

you really need to start over again checking everything on right

please dont drive it like this in case a piston pops out

Everything looked right i took few pictures before i changed the pads all looks the same was no left out parts. Followed it step by step both from online guides and haynes manual : /

I check it again tomorrow anyway. Anything i should look for or how to tell if there working properly without the drum on?

ok if identical as some are not hence the photo.:D some state for abs or non abs(y)

as daft as it sounds
The drums could have had there lip removed before, esp if the mechanic had a lathe todo it on

So the drums in thoery could be past it - without looking like it
Might be worthwhile getting the drums measured with a drum guage, you could be surprised

But yes - the brake shoes should work reasonably from the start, just take a while to be come properly bedded in and become stronger/better bite

Take some pictures, it could be the rear pistons have seized at a certain point and cant allow the brakes to work properly, and handbrake cables could have stretched alot

Hmm ill look at it all tomorrow even take it apart and make sure it is put together properly.

Yay i get to deal with the springs all over again :bang:

There are 3 ways i know

1 struggle with pliers and end up like this
toothless-toothless-tooth-teeth-smiley-emoticon-000666-large.gif

i nearly lost a tooth due to some mole grips slipping while doing drums - it was very painful for quiet a few days, and took a couple of weeks to become seated again
2 a Decent Flat screwdriver - attach spring to shaft - place tip in hole - pull and it drops into place (sometimes need a push to go into hole properly tho)
3 a Spring tool - but thats more money....

Yeah iv got a a spring tool just a bit fiddly got no problem doing them just annoying to do lol

spring location should look like this, the adjuster is of a different type, yours have the levers ,stick a photo up so we can advise.

Heres a pics of before i replaces and cleaned up etc

different setup ,on yours the big spring is behind the smaller one that looks perfect, thats why i asked for photo,on those shoes it has to go under the handbrake lever, looking at the left shoe at the lever shows a gap which tells me handbrake lever was forward as inner handbrake adjustment was done.

your blue spring looks stretched
look at the original picture for clarity
red spring looks like its upside down?
locating pins look out of their tree
i would put a complete new locating set on this about £12 from the factors
old shoes looked really mank so drums could well be fubbered

Well its all sorted now. Was the ratchet bits being a pain not adjusting properly.

Oh and a did put new springs and pins in it etc. I put the old ones back on during re fitting just to make sure was the right type and stuff. And fixed up the drums a little.

Thanks all for the help and suggestions!

yes also agree blue spring fecked needing new one, also the red spring is on wrong,it is supposed to go close to the edge at the corner(y)the spring is attached there first as you have to manouever the spring into the corner, better off with a new spring kit for safety sake.(y)
