I know that feeling too - ensure you leave the car in gear and Face the wheels so it'll roll into the kerb if it does somehow move
But give it a few days - make a habbit of making the rear drums work more
They dont do much work to start with - so applying the handbrake makes them work
If you can - allow it work for you in a safe manor, dont rely on it - be prepared to use the footbrake as you do normally

photo the old shoes and the new shoes side by side for differences.
as daft as it sounds
The drums could have had there lip removed before, esp if the mechanic had a lathe todo it on
So the drums in thoery could be past it - without looking like it
Might be worthwhile getting the drums measured with a drum guage, you could be surprised
But yes - the brake shoes should work reasonably from the start, just take a while to be come properly bedded in and become stronger/better bite
Take some pictures, it could be the rear pistons have seized at a certain point and cant allow the brakes to work properly, and handbrake cables could have stretched alot

There are 3 ways i know
1 struggle with pliers and end up like this![]()
i nearly lost a tooth due to some mole grips slipping while doing drums - it was very painful for quiet a few days, and took a couple of weeks to become seated again
2 a Decent Flat screwdriver - attach spring to shaft - place tip in hole - pull and it drops into place (sometimes need a push to go into hole properly tho)
3 a Spring tool - but thats more money....

spring location should look like this, the adjuster is of a different type, yours have the levers ,stick a photo up so we can advise.

yes also agree blue spring fecked needing new one, also the red spring is on wrong,it is supposed to go close to the edge at the cornerthe spring is attached there first as you have to manouever the spring into the corner, better off with a new spring kit for safety sake.
