The bulb will have a positive and negative so you need to connect with a twin cable. If I interpret your photo correctly you have used a twin cable with both wires twisted together and only connected to the bulb mains neutral. Take care.
@rayc You have misunderstood my suggestion, which was to use an older type sidelamp bulb with Ba9s single contact cap. Wire to cap used as basic test probe, and centre contact held against earthed metal.
 
I was commenting goznaid as his photo's showed a mains bulb connected via a two core cable, with the wires twisted together and connected only to the bulb Neutral screw . I was merely pointing out that the sidelight bulb was dual terminal. I don't think I commented at all to your post?
Sorry Ray but it was my post that goznaid was trying to follow. Unfortunately he seems to have misinterpreted the term sidelight bulb, and selected a mains bulb. Most older sidelight bulbs, and some in present use are either Ba9s or Ba15s single contact cap.
