Hi, having problems starting my car when turning the key it just clicks has had new starter and battery in the last 6 months it a 1.3 multijet can anyone help its driving me nuts aaaaaagh!:worship:

Hi.just a new battery the starter is clicking how hard is it to take off looks a nightmare can anyone help

Put battery on charge before touching the starter motor, check for any left on courtesy lights, just because it was a new battery 6 months ago doesn't mean jack. One other possible is a corroded earth strap.

When you have charged the battery remove the cell cover of the battery and then switch everything electrical on in the car including the glow plugs, headlights, fans etc then try and start it. Get someone to look at the cells while the car is trying to start. If they all bubble a little bit then no problem, but if one cell bubbles a lot and the others don't then the battery is fecked. :nono:

checking cells isn't easy with a lot of modern batteries,

just charge it and see what happens..,
maybe try a good one from another car / your ?? battery on a different car,
that's the easiest way to tell,

also worth using a volt meter to see what is actually IN the battery ( 12 V +, any lesss than 12 V and it's FLAT), then test for around 14V when engine is running = alternator charging,

I have done it dozens of times back when we had the family garage. It doesn't boil, just fizz small amount, but yes you should wear eye protection.

Hi, got a reconditioned starter put on and still the same problem just clicking will try the earth strap

get a set of jump leads and connect the black clamp on to the battery - connect the other end of the black lead on to the bell housing of the gearbox or alternatively the head or engine block, try to start it and if it starts you have a bad earth.

Top tip and so simple (y)
Been through the same problem with my motor and seems to be all sorted. All down the the earth strap. I disconnected at the bell housing, wire brush all the surfaces on the strap and bell housing. Also disconnected at the negative battery terminal and cleaned all the connecting surfaces. Reconnected and all sorted. The other consideration is the condition of the earth strap - they can corrode.
There is a good youtube clip that explains all and the different reading options but nowhere near as simple as the above.
