Technical Doblo 1.4 VVT performance

Hi all and seasons greetings. We have been enjoying our 2007 Doblo micro camper this year, but I wanted to discuss performance with the hive mind. I did all the usual work when we picked it up, cam belt, plugs, oil, filters and she drives very smoothly. Having never driven another I don't know what performance to expect from the little 1.4 VVT engine, but i often have changed down to 4th on a motorway hill and then into 3rd as it won't maintain speed otherwise. I can't imagine how it would drive with 5 people onboard.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Can i check the VVT is working?

Poor performance with your engine is normal. That is to say when running properly they are very slow.
If vvt was not operating correctly I would expect mil on and fault code.

Good point yes. No MIL or fault codes present.
