hi guys.

i have a fiat panda eleganza 1.2 manual petrol. i have been having problems with it where it cuts out at junctions, it has started doing it whilst driving along and all the electrics go off too (including Steering). At first i thought it was dodgy petrol so tried out a few others petrol stations but has carried on doing the same thing. it also gets really juddery. i took it to a fiat garage and they ran a diagnostic test and did a test drive obviously everything was fine. they said that i could have a new ignition switch but it might not make a difference. its been recalled because of a fire hazard by fiat (not sure if anyone else on here did) but i dunno if that could be partly to blame.

does anyone know what it could be and what route should i go down now.

thankyou

yesterday. they said that nothing showed up at all on the computer which was a bit confussing because obviously theres quite a big problem. =s

Do you have the option of using a different garage? Is there another Fiat shop within reasonable reach?
(Unless it's for warranty work I'll never put a wheel across the car park of my local stealer after their bad work and poor attitude - last service done elsewhere, all smiles and at a HUGE cost saving)

Our Sporting had the same problem, there is a thread somewhere on it.

Basically every so often after starting it used to cut out, then at junctions and then while driving. It always restarted so I didnt bother looking at it for a while but she wasnt happy with it cutting out on the dual carriage way to work.

It was cutting out and everything was going of including all the lights on the dash. Sometimes the immobiliser light did strange things but generally everything went off.

I checked all the connections under the bonnet on the battery and fuse boxes and found nothing improved it.
One weekend I then replaced the keyswitch (£15 from a scrapyard) and also checked and re-made all the connections on the body controller which is the ECU near the throttle pedal. Since then there have been no problems, we have been all over Europe without missing a beat.

I am assuming it was the keyswitch that was causing the problem.

Ignition switch failure was a common problem on the mk2 Punto, and the reason that no faults are stored is because when the switch contacts go "open circuit", the result is the same as switching the ignition off- the ECU's aren't "on" to record the problem.
