Hi, I have a 2010 Fiat 500 Lounge with a 1.2 petrol engine.
I recently encountered this issue where I was driving up a steep hill and while accelerating the check engine light came on, and the acceleration decreased. I continued driving and the acceleration seemed to go back to normal. After a few drives, the car seemed perfectly normal again and the check engine light went away.
One week later, I was doing a 20 mile drive. While driving up a steep ramp at the airport the exact same issue happened again. The car then seemed to be sluggish while joining the motorway. However, it seemed to had recovered just fine again after. This time, I bought some carburetor cleaner and cleaned throttle body. After a drive this seemed to have solved my issue. Until it happened again worse while I was pushing the car quite hard down a road. This time when I got to the end of the road same symptom, but when I drove off it stalled (it didn't rev high enough with the same input as usual). I restarted the car and it was fine again.
Ever since then it's been an intermittent issue for about a month. Where in one drive it happened randomly after getting up to temp, but this time the throttle pedal just stopped working altogether. After pulling over and restarting my car it was fine again. It then happened a following 2 times in that same 3 mile journey. I covered another 12 miles since and it's been fine. Every time I switch my car on the engine light appears.
Like mentioned above I have cleaned the throttle body. Using my scan tool I have read the Absolute pedal position sensors D and E and they seem fine. The throttle position sensor starts at 87.84% and decreases around 10% to full throttle. At constant throttle it sometimes struggle to stay at the same percentage.
I'm trying to avoid bringing it to a workshop as reading through threads on this issue people have had trouble finding the issue. New Parts for this issue seem to be expensive. I've got the next 3 week off where I don't need the car so I want to fix it in my own time. The solutions which I found is replacing the ECU which seems excessive to me. I have also read that people replace the pedal and the entire throttle bodies which had to effect.
I have attached a video of my throttle body, I have no idea whether it's operating correctly? I found a video on YouTube explaining this is incorrect behavior. I am not sure what to do? Any help would be much appreciated!
