I'm trouble shooting a problem on my punto on the rear drum brakes.

Every time I'm braking hard I'm getting all I can describe it as a loud clicking/banging noise.

At first I thought it maybe the handbrake cable as it is cable tied to the suspension on the back as the plastic has snapped off sometime in the past. So I replaced the cable ties and tightened it more so the cable does not bounce off the metal. Which has not worked.

I then dismantled the whole drum and checked all the springs and shoes but all is in good order nothing wrong.

I then decided to keep the car stationary and press the peddle hard with the door open and again I can hear the clicking noise again from around the suspension area

I need some help as I'm out of ideas

While I'm at it I also need to know. My car has rust at the jacking points when I jacked my car up at the jacking point it basically disintegrated under the car is sound apart from the jacking points so I'm wondering if this can be fixed or not.

Thanks again

did you adjust the shoes up?

Re: Jacking point's. Inever use these on apunto..or the sidewinder jack
there is good secure places for trolley jack,

you may need some welding done..if jacking places have gone or Hole'd.
hard to say pictures may help.

Where would you recommend jacking using a trolley jack ?

There are 2 points I use for trolley Jack underneath. On passenger side underneath towards centre of car engine, there is a big bolt on main chassis of the car, this is incredible strong and holds the weight on trolley Jack no problem. Drivers side I just use main sub frame

Yes inspected thoroughly nothing wrong with the car just the jacking points the cars in really good shape I've even gave it a coat of hammerite under the car.

For the adjusters I don't think mine has them on the drums. But if someone could tell me what it looks like I would be greatful as I've never had a car with drums like the punto

I was going to direct you to the link to the Haynes manual at the top of the sticky section but unless I'm going blind the braking section is omitted. Anyroad the adjuster is about the size of a pen and sits under the cylinder betweeen the top of the two shoes, I'd say if you poked around in the guides section you would find a good picture.

On mine, the Adjuster is more or less hidden,
on the spline part you adjust there is a metal flap covering it,

if no adjuster, then how wouid this be meant to be set up,
icarnt see adjusting the cable taking the slack out of it or push the shoes out
to the required distance,

when you put the drums back on did they go on with ease or was there contact
with the drum and shoes?

they went on with slight contact. I just don't get it ive had it completely apart and cant find any adjuster on it. like in the photo its just a metal plate between the two shoes. maybe im missing something. could it be on the shoe its self.

I would recommend checking the drum inner diameter the maximum value should be written on it from inside and also check its the circularity

is this an early punto MK2.. say year 2000 Wreg ish?

if so, have alook on the Middle of the Rearbeam and see if its got a load rating

valve. (it will look like a metal hinge with a..spring on)

Thank you Oldham mine is a 2001 but after inspecting the shoes again I found the auto adjuster never seen them on shoes before at first I thought they looked fine as the shoes had plenty of pad left intact they looked new but when I took them off and looked at the teeth on the auto adjuster they were blunt no teeth left just metal fragments.

So I have changed the shoes and drums and now have no noise at all just very smooth braking and 100% better braking power.

I could not thank everyone enough

So I would of been a very happy bunny if my mate did not touch my stereo and fuse box when I left him for 10 minutes in my car, when I got back my reading light no longer works and for some reason my stereo won't turn on.

Now I do know that in the past the stereo wires had been cut but when I got the car the wires were Sellotaped back together. I know im asking a lot but I really don't know anyone who is a electrician so again I've got to rely on everyone here.

Typical fix it again tomorrow, it's defiantly held its name with me as I have had to fix something each day since buying it

I've checked the fuse box the fuse for the radio was blown so replaced it I now have my light on but the radio is still not receiving any power. This is doing my bloody noggin in i love my music to much. When I spoke to my mate he did say the red wire made a electric spark when he tried to connect it to another wire for some daft reason. So I'm thinking the wire maybe shorted out. Any ideas on what I can do.
