Can someone tell me how you would clean the engine bay ie with a spray hose. Obvoisly you would have to cover up the electrics etc. but how?

Any step by step instructions?

Thanks

if ya don't have acess to Ye old Steam Clean'a then i would personally take all highly crap looking parts and rip em out for a good rub in the tub with de-graser (LOL, Plz make sure u have gaskets - Or just wait for the gasket to go & u've a good excuse the remove the part anyway) As for wiring, hmmmm, insulation tape and cable covering will sort it out a beast.. :p

goto halfords and buy some CD2 engine cleaner. Mix with a green brillo pad, some elbow grease and a generous portion of time and roberts your mothers brother

Or, that + Gunk...a cup-wire brush (drill attachment) and a pressure washer!

CD did this for mine:

I'm gonna be cleaning my one when I get chance, possibly after my exams. I've got some GUNK degreaser, which I intend to spray on my head and then wrinse off. I've got oil around my head, hence the need for degreaser. :spin: Be very careful with water though :spin: People usually get away with water, but they sometimes they don't. Keep away from the electrics, and don't use a steam cleaner. I'm just going to do a very small area of my one because I can't get my hand down there. The rest of the things I intend to do by hand. I've got some autosol stuff which polishes Ali, I've put a small bit on my rocker cover, and after a lot of rubbing it looks better.

whoah, that stuff is good, it painted your cam cover and installed an induction kit as well as cleaning the engine bay.

and fitted a strut brace. The induction kit was already there tho..

I did cheat a bit, i took the head off and cleaned and painted it.

I cleaned my old car with an old paint brush and a bucket load of parafin.
It did the job well and then I blasted the whole lot with a Kärcher pressure washer to remove any bits of ol' crap that the parafin lifted.

One thing to take note of though when using either:
1. Make sure the parafin has evaporated before starting the engine - the smoke is rather worrying when you don't know where its comming from ;)
2. When you jet wash the engine bar, relube the throttle cable afterwards as the jet wash will prob remove any grease and it can stick open (especially when at traffic lights in rush hour traffic  ).
2b. Keep away from the battery terminals as the water can make contact between both of ther terminals.... nuff said.
2c. Its worth while removing the HT Leads and distributor cap and drying em out. It took me ages to work out why I couldn't start mine after I did this.

It does look good though

Best of luck

oh and btw, if you got a tarmac driveway, don't do the petrol thing over it - petrol eats through tarmac like acid. Do it on the street.

I used a steam pressure washer and some engine shine in a can!! When i did it i kept the engine running!

This is how it turned out
