well, could be a few things that caused this, firstly (and most likely reason) it could be the clay was to cold therefore hard and left marring on the paint, dirt could have got on the clay (unlikely though as you say you was careful ), or the claying and washing could have removed any polish that was hiding marks that may have been there beforehand , if you did cause the marks then a light polish should remove the marks quite easily (unless you did get dirt on the clay)
