Does anyone know where the fuel adjustment screw(mixture) is located on the 1000cl fire? My car idles perfectly at 850rpm(yes i have a rev counter)but if i step on the accelarator it revs up to whatever i hit it to and then it starts to stall unless i move it again. If i keep moving the gas it will rev fine but the moment i hold it steady it will begin to stall. Another thing if i take out the air filter box thingy and cover 3/4 of the air intake on the carburettor it will work flawlessly which got me to the conclusion that the mixture is messed up(not enough gas) or something might be clogged up.It started yesterday ,car was running fine and next start it was like this.

So far i´ve checked:
-timming is correct,i made marks and used light to make sure
-spark, i got spark on all plugs
-compression, all whithin speck
-fuel filter, fitted new one
-air filter, also new

btw: i have almost completed a piece by piece write up of the clutch but i wasn´t able to find my digicam. If anyone has pics of the tranny/clutch that i could use i would very much appreciate it.

Thank you for your efforts at making this a rather usefull forum.

Here it is

:D:D

Thanks, i tried that screw and it didn´t have the desired effect. I´m starting to think something is clogged because when the accelarator pump is on it works and when it goes out is wants to stall. Guess i´ll have to clean it even if i don´t want to[}:)].

btw:know where i could get a good shop manual(Fiat Panda) preferably in english:D

That too hapenned to me, and the car didnt hang on at idle.... i think is the a electric problem in the timing ignition module, it has disapered too in one morning (after a week) [?][:0]

Mine disappeared after i hosed the engine with water and couldn´t get it to start again. this mornig i took the the plugs out taking cre not to let water into the combustion chamber(NOT!!!!! I was so pissed i could break it with a sledge hammer, if i had one[}:)])and after cleaning them it stated and the problem is gone:Dand i´m happy:D.

may I suggest that you ditch the Haynes manual and aquire a copy of the Porter Manual ?It is fully approved and endorsed by FIAT and I find it invaluable.
Porter Publishing Ltd., Little Hereford Street, Bromyard, Hereford, HR7 4DE
Fiat part No:46999979 or Porter part no:pM3822

HHmmmmmmm

problem resumed today and mixture adjustment is having no effect(it did make show up higher in the rev range)
Any other ideas as to cause, remember that partially blocking air intake on carburettor removes problem completly(yes i thought about covering up the intake and keep driving)

have now confirmed that with the choke fully on(pulled all the way out) the car runs fine but with higher idle the it would normally have with choke before.

ideas anyone?

An inlet manifold air leak is still a likely cause.

A vacuum gauge is brilliant tool for telling all kinds of things about an engine, but the readings need a bit of interpreting.

If you haven't got one, check the following items, probably in this order:

vacuum advance unit, and it's pipe-work - if you can blow through the membrane it's shot. (If it is broken, your ignition timing may be set wrongly.. if it was set with vacuum advance connected.)

inlet manifold gasket (you might consider spraying something flammable, like butane, very carefully around the various edges of the gasket - if the engine speed alters you've found a leak - if it catches fire you've lost your eyebrows, or the car).

worn out carburettor butterfly spindle.

The carburettor is an exchange unit from Fiat so it is good(i exchanged to see if it solved the problem), vaccum advance is shot but it was disconnected to set timming, butane spraying had no effect(i used the ligher filling stuff).
thanx for the info

vacuum advance replace problem continues:(. i temporarely solved it by unscrewing the choke accelaration screw(so the choke no longer revs the car) and i drive with the choke pulled, not good but it works at least:).

Running out of ideas.

The obvious things seem to be covered - assuming FIAT sold you a good carburettor, and there seems to be enough fuel pressure, as you can overcome the problem with a rich mixture provided by the choke.

It still seems to point back to the carburettor.

In your position I'd get the "old technology" tools out:
vacuum gauge. (doubles as fuel pressure tester too).
compression tester.
timing light.
colour tune.

from what you've said you've done at least half of these..
BTW, what were your compressions??

Here are my compression readings(please allow some errors in user interpretation/equipment):

cylinder 1-11.4 bar
cylinder 2-11.7 bar
cylinder 3-11.1 bar
cylinder 4-11.4 bar

i´m now ready to try checking the carburettor if anyone says what to look at?
