Hello all,

I had the cambelt’ tensioners and water pump changed by a local garage. All seems to be fine but..

Another garage undertook some bodywork for me and their head mechanic commented that he thought the Cambelt was over tensioned as it sounded odd (conversation was in French’ not my native language).

Before I go back to the original garage, how can I verify if the tension is correct?

If a cambelt is too tight it can quickly damage the bearings/guides or waterpump , what ever that it drives.
Sometime that can be heard as a noise.
If the garage that fitted it says it's OK , then ask them to put that in writing along with the warranty that they will replace Free of charge and parts damaged when it fails.;)
There are many specific tools to measure tension on belts , in the past a good mechanic could tell by the feel and the amount it could depress when pushed or twisted.
I can't find a listing for Barchetta in my timing books , but as a guide they often use a weight on a lever which engages in the belt tensioner, something like this photo at no. 6 in picture.:)

Tensioner has a pointer on it that should line up with a mark on the engine case. Tensioner is also spring loaded and not fixed.

I haven't got much information on Barchetta, but if that is the model OP has then garage should have been able to correctly tension it, assuming done properly.;)
