I am rebuilding the calipers on the front since one has seized. I have had a search through but cannot find the answer to this.

I have got the piston out but cannot get the dust seal off the caliper. I expected it to just sit in the groove but now wonder if it is held in by a spring clip of sorts but can't see any evidence of that.

Could someone confirm please.

Sorted.

For anyone else the dust seal is bonded to a metal ring. Very unlikely to come out clean. Find the edge of the ring which is very thin and collapse it inwards. Best carried out on the bench.

Any tips? I'm really starting to lose my sanity with this dust seal.

Does yours have that metal ring ?
the reason I ask on all recent cars of different makes I have worked on the the dust cover is located in a groove in caliper so just fished out with a small screwdriver. The hardest part even when well lubed is getting the piston past it down to the actual brake seal as that keeps it all in place.
Can you get a clue looking at the replacement seals?

The replacement seal is all plastic and I can see from the size, the metal rings defo gotta come out. I've also cut away enough of the rubber to see that it's definitely bonded to the metal bit.

So probably the metal ring has just rusted into the caliper a bit, but if the new one doesn't require the old ring at least that is less to worry about damaging on removal.;)
