Heyy everyone

Bit of a random question, but does anyone else have a problem with their 500's brakes when the engine stalls/isn't turned on?? My brakes literally don't work at all when the engine has stalled (as I stupidly did at a busy roundabout today, leading to me and my little beauty nearly being wiped out by a bus haha). I've had Corsas and Kas in the past and never had this problem, so I didn't know whether it was just this car? It's happened a few times, I think i'm going to go back to the dealership next week just to get it checked out, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)

As Dave said, servo assist isn't available with the engine off so it may feel like the car isn't braking compared to normal. I noticed that on the 500 the servo cuts off very quickly after stalling compared to other cars so that may be why you're noticing it.

There should be enough residual vacuum in the servo to allow at least a couple of uses of the brake pedal after the engine stops, so you should have been able to stop your car in an emergency with no fuss. If your car's brakes go hard immediately the engine stops then I'd say you do have a problem. However, if you were frantically pumping the brake pedal then you'll use up that vacuum and the brakes will indeed go hard.

Plenty of cars were sold until the '70s without servo assistance. Caterhams still are. The brakes will still work - just put some pixieforce behind the pedal. :)

Yup, agree with all the above/below.

I'd really be looking into why the car stalls.

There is a tiny possibility that a small vacuum leak causes the car to stall on small throttle openings that could be from the servo pipe.

Cheers

D

i think she's the reason why engine stalled. othervise she'd be asking why the engine did stall in the first place. she put in neutral and killed the engine while moving?? well it's really kind of a stupid thing to do..
