Technical drum brakes

Technical drum brakes

Thanks IRC, I am hoping the built plates I have found in Italy will work so your France comment makes me more positive
I've got a couple of 2010 Active ECOs here at the moment and they are both Bosch, so changeover date may have been a bit flexible in normal Fiat fashion. Checked the build date on one of them and its March 2010.
The other has a slightly lower VIN so could be 2009, haven't checked yet.*
I used to be able to get pre-assembled Bosch-type units from a company in France including back plates, but they seem to have disappeared since Brexit.
Would be nice to find a source again if they are still out there.
I don't remember there being a LHD/RHD choice, just ABS/Non-ABS. Apparently ABS was standard on the base model in the UK earlier than Europe.

*just checked, its November 2009.

Not relevant to the 500, but just for completeness, Pandas can also have Bendix-type brakes, which use different Backplate, shoes, cylinders, springs and locating clips.
Don't seem to see many of them, but they do pop up and bite you in the err... well, they do turn up occasionally.

Just out of interest: Why would there be a difference between LHD and RHD?

gr J
I don't think there is but some eBay ads advise the parts are LHD only, probably a standard wording on their adverts. Will find out over the weekend and update this thread.

There wouldn't as far as I can see

I can't see any mention on eper

But I have seen an eBay listing for two new ones, at £160 with a red warning say it only fits LHD

The listing may be wrong

Here one from the same company but for a punto

It's only in the description, not in the main advert

I checked the part number in eper there's no mention of LHD

Either eper is wrong or the advert is wrong

My money on the advert

I can see how
The only cause of the LHD being different from RHD I can think of are the handbrake cables. However the handbrake lever being in the middle of the car it should not impact the cables. Unless the fuel tank is fitted differently.
I can't see why the
While checking for the handbrake elements and fuel tank on ePER (no mention of LHD / RHD) I found out that the rear brakes have been modified 4 times until April 2011:

3/07/2009
25/05/2010
26/01/2011
30/04/2011
Brakes would be lh or rh drive. Thanks for the info mate 👍 will post some pics of mine later and the extent of the corrosion.

I've looked for the part number from the Augustin Group screenshot in ePER and it's not listed for the 500 :D

But it's the brake kit:

Not the back plate.

But I probably discovered where the LHD / RHD confusion comes from:

They are not symmetrical. So, one goes on the right hand side, the other on the left hand side of the vehicle. But are marked RH / LH on the diagrams. I suppose someone mistook it for RHD / LHD, which is marked GS(X) / GD(X) on the Italian documentation :D

The complete assembly (without drum) for Delphi type brakes seems to have the reference FC180119, and more than one site claims it's compatible with the Panda 169, 500, Ka and Panda 319.
But this info was translated using a combination of me, Google and Ebay.IT auto translation, so could be wrong.

Another interesting finding in eLearn attached:

On 5514 Fiat 500 (all versions) with drum brakes, the chassis numbers of which are comprised in the range from 0J658682 to 0J664976, due to a possible nonconformity, it is necessary to check the printed “DATACODE” showing the manufacturing date on the rear brake backing plates.

Fiats Part number for the 319 is different

Later Panda 169 and later 500 share the same numbers

I suspect the difference will be very minor

well, after discovering the locking wheel nut key was missing managed to get the nut out an "alternative" way, this is what i have found "Lockheed" i believe. I wont mention the fun i had rebuilding the wheel bearing but needless to say what should have taken 30 mins took 3 hrs ! thanks for all the support to date guys.

Yes Lockheed 👍

Rest looks in good condition

Pull the rubber seals back on the wheel cylinders

If it's not weeping underneath I would be happy to change just the back plate

See it's rotted by the handbrake grommet, is the grommet okay

I think I will buy the whole assembly and give an extra coat of something to the back of the plate before fitting.

I fitted the new drum assemblies this evening and can confirm there is no difference between lhd and rhd cars. The parts came in 5 days and no export issues. Thanks for guidance and assistance all 🙏 the back plates seem only available from Fiat at £90 per side, these were about £80 ready assembled with shoes and adjusters etc. I hope this helps someone else on here.
