Started the job of stripping the engine and drained the sump, about 5 litres of brown mayonnaise came out and everything is covered in the same stuff!
Any ideas on how to clean this up? is it a case of filling up with new oil and a new filter, running the engine until hot and then draining and repeating the process?

Basically yes, you can also try using an engine flush product which you add to the normal oil to help the process. You can get a flush oil which you use instead of the standard oil, never used this myself though.

As you say.....cheap oil, then dump it. I would do it twice, but that's just me. New filters as well. I'm not sure about flushing oil...a lot of bad reports online where it shifts stuff and everything goes a bit pear shaped. I have had a bad experience with the stuff.

Talon had some nasty oil in it. the sump plug was stuck and the filter was rusted through in places.. not been changed for years.

i took no chances and used a full tin of engine flush, ran the car for 15 mins, dumped the oil, filled with the cheapest crap i could get, ran the car like that for a few weeks (the car was not road going, so it was just moving it around the back of the house) so it was actualy like driving it around the block a few times, then i dumped that stuff, replaced the filter and filled up the the most top brand expensive oil i could buy.
happy engine was happy after that. :D
