Hi All
I'm new here and wish to find out if replacing the battery in my Ducato based Hymer will affect the immobiliser?
The engine is a 2.5td in a 1996 Hymer B544. The battery totally died when spending a weekend in Yorkshire and the van has been jump started 3 times since then with no problems with the code. The key code light goes off as it should and the engine starts right away.
I'm a little nervous about taking the battery out as many people seem to have problems when changing batteries with this system.
I would also like to fit a kill switch for when the van is stored, but then the immobiliser question rears its head again.
Could I have some of your expert thoughts please.
I do have the red key for this vehicle.

Many thanks

Cross the bridge when you come to it. Disconnecting the battery doesn't lose the code its written in non voltaile eeprom.

The problem people have with immobiliser and fitting a new battery is usually hitting the inertia switch (mounted behind the battery) with 30kg of lead and acid a push of the switch solves that.

A dodgy battery is worse as the drop in voltage during cranking can be enough to bork the communication between pump, key or immobiliser box resulting in corrupted or non matching codes.

Thanks for your response. Like you say it's got to be done so I will sort it in the next couple of weeks. Those batteries are really heavy and space in an A class motorhomes engine bay is really tight. Scraped knuckles and colourful language here we come!!

For what its worth I think an 096 battery is absolutely sufficient for the ducato and its 7.5cm shorter, 1.5cm lower and 5kg / 6kg lighter.

I've had 2 019 batteries and as you say its extemely tight. When our last battery gave up the ghost in febrary I put in the tiny 027 battery from my wifes 1.2 stilo and its run perfectly on that ever since.

Thanks Corcai, that's really good to know and adds some food for thought particularly about the weight of these batteries. It's one thing to lift them but another to slot them into place.
Cheers ?

All sorted, new battery installed, went with the same size, not such a bad job all over in about 20 mins. Fitted a kill switch just to be safe and the old girl started first crank. Well pleased.

Thanks to all for your help.
