Hi all,
Just wondered if anybody had any suggestions on my current issue -

Bought a 2004 Fiat Idea 1.4 Active Automatic for £2500 about 10 weeks ago with a warranty and after about three days the front passenger side suspension spring snapped.
Took it down to the local garage as the trader I bought the car from was too far away, (I live in Sheffield and the trader is located in Doncaster) and I felt it would be too dangerous to drive so was charged £100 to get it fixed.
Called the trader RS Trade cars of Doncaster who refused to pick up the bill, so contacted the warranty company who reported that suspension springs were not covered under the policy, so I took the hit and thought nothing more of it.

Anyway, last week while driving I suddenly got a Gearbox failure message come up on the dash and the car dropped itself into neutral and wouldn’t go back into gear.
After about ten mins it finally went back into gear and I was able to limp home.
Next day I took the car to the local Fiat dealership – Autoworld of Chesterfied to have the issue diagnosed (£90) and was told that it was due to low oil in the Selespeed unit and to fix the leak and get a replacement It would cost around £1600!!

Obviously I was pretty shocked by this and asked if it was covered under my warranty to which they replied that when they called the warranty company they were told that oil leaks were not covered even though the auto gearbox was!!

I was advised though that if I kept topping up the selespeed unit with selespeed oil it should be ok.
So I purchased a litre of the oil and got them to top it up to the max and brought the car home.
It was fine for a few days but then yesterday same thing happened again, the car dropped into neutral, except this time there was no warning of any gearbox failures.
Again, after a few mins the car was able to go into gear and I was able to drive home without any further issues.

Once I got home I checked the selespeed reservoir level and found it to be just below the maximum level, so clearly this couldn’t be the fault, but I topped it up anyway and figured I would see what happens.

Well today on my way to work the problem occurred again, so when I got the chance, I called Autoworld and asked how come the problem persisted even though the oil was being topped up and was advised that I would have to bring it in for another diagnostics check (and another £90) to see what other faults they could find!
Obviously I'm not too happy about this because first of all if the problem is something unrelated to the oil leak then my warranty would have covered this and secondly I’m having to pay another £90 to have further checks done, which I would have thought should have been done in the first place!

I’ve also tried contacting RS Traders of Doncaster and argued the fact that I’ve only had the car just over a couple of months and had all these issues but of cause they’re not interested and say there’s nothing they can do.

Anybody out there have any advise, I’m pretty desperate as I cant afford another car or repair the one I’ve got!!

Apologies if this is in the wrong area as I'm asking for technical as well as legal advise on how I should proceed :worship:

Did the garage say where the CS speed fluid was leaking from?

I can't see why they've quoted £1600 to repair, what was that to replace

They said that the whole selespeed unit would need to be replaced at a cost of around £850 and the rest would be labour charges!

When it comes to automatic gearbox repairs, it is best to take your car to an automatic specialist.

Although I do agree that taking the car to a automatic specialist is normally the best thing to do in this particular case I could have it fixed in 15 mins using only a star screwdriver....not all faults are 'deep inside the box'.
The idea uses a 'conventional gearbox/clutch' with a hydraulic selector unit so it's not a true automatic.

Does anyone know of a dualogic (or Selespeed) expert in the south-east. Hopefully Kent? My Idea tends to clash gears going down (mainly from 4th to 3rd) when I leave it to do the changing. If I tap it down it's fine. I have had it checked by a Fiat dealer in Spain when I was there and he reset all the actuators and checked the fluid level. It made no difference though and I really would like to get it looked at by an expert. It's quite clunky too but works without any other issues. It's been like this since it had 11k on the clock and it's not on 48k.

Had exactly the same problem with a panda a 8 month back. After a number of attempts the problem was the selespeed oil. But not just the level
I ended up draining the lot flushing the system with a standard flushing oil then allowed it to drain completely overnight. Refilled the system and used the full version of multiecuscan to reset the system. Been fine ever since 6800 miles and going strong

I wouldn't have used standard flushing oil myself, but at least you managed to get it sorted :)
