After putting my rusty, sorned, old 1991 4x4 on the classifieds at the beginning of the year and not receiving any offers that i thought were reasonable,I bit the bullet and had it welded up and MOT'd. Didn't cost me anything, but traded my skills(electrical) to the garage/welder.
I then fitted new exhaust, changed alloy wheels back to a set of steels, and changed all fluids to nearly original spec.Check out www.silverstonefactors.com
Had to change rear wheel bearings/hubs as advised by MOT.All I need to do now is change rusty doors, dented bonnet, rusty tailgate and get a complete respray, so not much more to do........
I have just picked up a complete set of doors, bonnet and tailgate,in mint condition, and I mean mint, from Charles Trent Breakers in Nottingham, who were stripping a K Reg Panda Colour with twin sunroofs, also in perfect condition.
This was a perfect car ,with only 80k on the clock and not a hint of rust.Heart breaking but thats life.
I had some wheel hub bearings in my shed ,bought cheap years ago but they were the ones without the groove in them, and was horrified to see the price of the proper rear wheel 4x4 hubs. So I took one grooved bearing ,as a template, and three non grooved ones to my local back street precision engineering shop and they machined a groove in for twenty quid a hub.
Fitted one last weekend, but had to renew the oil seal on the drive shaft(£2.30. Ebay) and spent an hour in casualty having the cut in my hand stitched up after arguing with an angle grinder, trying to remove twentythree year old rounded rusty hub bolts.
Fitted the other one last night in ten minutes, with new oil seal, bolts, 10mm 1.25 fine pitchx 30mm long. I could only buy these off ebay, as none of my local engineeering hardware places stocked them.
Then I gave it a bloody good thrashing for thirty minutes.
Still cant stop smiling, and so pleased that nobody would pay me what it was worth.
Now I hope we have a really bad winter with lots of snow.
A great forum by the way with loads of information, and I look forward to adding my snippets of knowledge if I ever have any.
