Right I've been getting this noise for a little while now, very tickety, sounds like a belt noise

From examination it isn't coming from the alternator, sounds like I expected from the timing belt area under the cover maybe down the lower area

The noise has been present since the cambelt change but didn't occur for first week or so after change, also the noise speeds up in sync with the revs increasing and ends up being drowned out by the engine noise,

But at idle and low revs it is starting to annoy me, I have attached a video link so hopefully it can be confirmed to me what noise that sounds like, and whether it's something normal and have to live with or not

Thanks :)

I can't get the clip to load and in my experience video clips are hopeless for distinguishing noise.

Was the tensioner changed with the belt? Is the first question that comes to mind.

Use a long screwdriver, blunt end to ear, as a stethoscope (or buy a real mechanics stethoscope) to further isolate the source of the sound.

Should work? Yeah it's difficult but thought might be better than describing it.

Yes tensioner was changed with the belt, sounds like it's coming from lower end of timing cover but that may be echoing/vibrating, will take another listen..

Thanks

It sounds like top end clatter to me,

if youve recently changed the plugs on this, take one out and check it and make
sure youve been given the right ones, Wrong plugs can cause serious clatter and damage,

failing that is the oil level good? these run on hydraulic lifters so the correct oil level is critical,

The injectors on these can get abit moody too, mine went clattery once some good fuel treatment and achange over to the expensive petrol quietned it down,

these generaly have tappy injectors mind.

to check timing on these you need two rods of equal length to drop down pots 1&2 and lock the cam off with a socket extension.

if rods aint equal timings out,

the correct timing tools are 48-quid for cheapo ones upto 150 for propper ones
get the garage who did timing belt to check timing,

Have double checked the plugs, all match up, noise was present before the plug, lead change tho.

Checked oil level today and is right on max, same as was few days ago.

Haven't tried a fuel treatment but currently been using v-power nitro,

First I thought it was just generally tappety, but realising now this doesn't sound what I have think sounds tappety, also I don't think it's a coincidence it started after belt change,

I'm gonna go back to garage in next few days to ask them to look over timing :)

Thanks! :)

Take it back to garage mate, timing might be a tooth or so out you never knows,
they might of used chopsticks to time it up,
not all garages will have the correct locking tool for the job,ask em what theyve used,

Ye definitely will do, will quiz them and get them to check and if out then re time the belt, should be a simple enough job for them surely?

shouid take them 5-10mins to check timing if theyve got the correct tool's.

Watch them for throwing a get out Clause,

Eg its not our fault its the parts suppliers fault take it up with them blah de blah.

These parts shouidnt fail after limited mileage if good parts where used,

They may of set the tensioner to max ..on setting timing it up and havent released it to the other marker on confirming timing is correct,.
easy mistake to make but it eats the tensioner and causes wear on waterpump if belt is two tight,

did you hear abelt whine after you got car back ?

Quality parts were used, gates etc,

No didn't hear any belt whine when I got it back, did notice a slight ticky noise but thought it was normal belt noise at first, but then its worse..

Forgot to add,

before you take it back check the 4 bolts on the bottom pulley.

the pulley that drives the alt belt,

ive seen these work loose and rattle there way out,

if so take them out loctite them and put em back in,

check for anymissing ones,

Just had a quick listen again a bit earlier, it definitely sounds to me like the noise is coming from lower down the timing cover, didn't have chance to check the 4 crank pulley bolts oldhammer, are they easy to get at anyway?

they have acover over them at the botom,

you can just about get your hand in from top of engine and check bolts that way,

failing that its jack car up and wheel off,

Will have a tinker tomorrow, see if I can feel any loose bolts, tbh I hope it is this as it's something I will sort out..hate having to put my car in a garage knowing the job might not be up to scratch

If it was my old 8v I would happily have tackled the belt, etc but didn't wanna mess up with it being the 16v!
