High Gran Turismo
rather a  mixture of two languages - can this be right?

ah! Thanks!
Although perhaps an Italian-speaker could clarify what is meant by "Tourism", as oposed to "Tourismo", for which the "T" is more often accepted to stand.
I also notice that Fiat have done away with the HGT moniker in days of late.
Strange?

tourism is italian for turismo

gran turismo: a touring car, usually a fast sports car with a hard fixed roof

all makes sense :)

Touring or Tourism in Italian is Turismo, Alfa Romeo's entry level (I think) is the same.

Tourism is an English word, not Italian! It's Italian equivalent is Turismo. In motoring terms, the Italian phrase Gran Turismo (GT) means Grand Tourer in English. FIAT's use of High Gran Turismo is just made to signify a level above GT.

The suffix GT has long been adopted by manufacturers to denote the sportier versions of their models. Sadly, it's been used so much and on so many cars that are far from true sports cars that it's pretty much lost it's impact.

As Ade posted, this link tells you all you need to know...
