General A terrible knocking

I have only had my Panda for a little while but the knocking on the front wheels is getting unbearable.

The big question is?? Is it likley to be a CV joint or a gearbox?

I havent really had the time to look though in the short time Ive had it Ive endured 6000 miles of it without a stereo.

Its time to look but first I thought I should consult the Oracle

Find out under what circumstances the noise happens:

randomly over bumps etc -

wheel nuts loose or
knackered shock absorber or
worn out suspension joint or
steering rack "clatter" or
engine/gearbox mountings


steering full lock and accelerating -

probably drive shaft(s)


There are lots of other interesting noises wheel bearings and gearboxes can make, but they're not top of the list for knocking noises - unless there are other symptoms.[:0]

Its definately, not wheel nuts or bearings. Did check these out.

Think you are right about driveshafts, will start a pilgrimage to find a tat yard locally.

If a suspension joint (balljoint) is loose enough to hear you will certainly be able to feel the movement with your fingers if you wiggle it a bit Any play at all means it needs to be replaced as it will be an MOT failure. Check the balljoints at each end of the steering rack when the wheels are on the ground. These are most likely to go first.

Wish I wasnt so lazy, I have just been to the goose fair (340 miles round trip)in it for the weekend and the noise is still there (getting worse).

I love the M40, I clocked 97MPH in my 1.0 CLX. Nutter or what with a noisy driveshaft?

It always gives me great pleasure when I flash Jaguars who are sat in the outside lane with a Panda..........
