Well what a frustrating and filthy day. Using FIAT part number 55183134 from ePer
I ordered this GSP inner CV / plunge joint from Autodoc:

Drained 'box, removed driveshaft, removed spider...

...and spider provided in the kit doesn't fit the driveshaft :(

It doesn't even have the same number of splines (19 vs 20 on the shaft).

Spider is also a different size so I can't use the old spider in the new joint.

So I've had to put the old one back on.

Have I just been sent the wrong part? The differential end of the shaft seems about the same as the old one (I didn't bother measuring it).

Or have I missed something? Did driveshaft change at some point? Mine's a 2004 1.2

1.2 Dynamic

That's a pain.......by the way never fully trust auto doc part finder.....always contact customer services and get them to check fitment via vin etc that way if it doesn't fit they will take it back.

That was my thinking, I don't generally trust sites like that on accuracy which is why I bypassed their system and relied on ePer.

First time I've used Autodoc, and only because I needed a bundle of parts. Everything else is fine.

I'll double check with them next time.

That 617046 number provided by Koalar does show up as a match for the 169 (but listed as a Ford part on Autodoc) and states 20 splines, so I guess that's the part I needed. Thanks guys👍

I guess 617046 (pre-2010, 20 splines) and 617001 (post-2020, 19 splines) are both covered by OEM number 55183134?

Which might explain how I got caught out.

O well, it's only 20 quid, I've made more expensive mistakes :) Just annoying I had to take everything apart to find out

If you select the vehicle first in autodoc

Then type in 617002

It says it does not fit

And if you look at the compatibility

It's only list the later LPG

55183134 is the correct number

I believe it's just for the cup

Advertising a complete kit as 55183134 is where the confusion starts, I am sure when I first looked I saw 55183134 on autodoc or one of its subsidiaries adverting it as compatible with all pandas 2003-2012 I can't find it now.

Auto doc only do free return/ exchange if you go through customer services to check your order fitment before placing order ...or if you pay for "safe" order.

Plus who knows if vehicle had a used drive shaft somewhere along the line?

Distance selling in the UK has more rights than buying in a shop

It's advertised wrong, so it shouldn't be a problem

How companies deal with genuine problems is what separate the good companies from the bad

I will be following this with interest

Shame John Richardson isn't still active on the forum

As they had a similar problem with some springs from autodoc

Well Autodoc offered a refund, but I'd have to pay postage so it's not really worth it. Postage would probably cost more than the part to send a CV joint from Ireland to Germany.

I asked for an exchange for the correct part as their site states the part should fit. Here's what they had to say:
"We could only give you a refund and will not be able to resend the part as you placed the order as not registered."
"I can see that the Safe Order option was not activated for this order. That means that you'll need to pay the delivery costs yourself if you want to return this package. To avoid this in the future, you can activate it for your next order."

I ordered as a guest. If I had registered on their site and selected 'Safe Order' maybe they would have exchanged and paid delivery, as Jack suggested. Mere guests don't get this service it seems :/

I suppose I could kick up a fuss and argue but that's not really my thing. If I had used their site as they intend with my vehicle details I would have bought the right part, so I'm not angry with them.

I just never stopped to consider that there might be different driveshafts on the 1.2 169. Lesson learned.

Finally they add: "The most suitable part for a particular car can only be given by an individual selection according by VIN" so I'll use VIN in future.

Number of splines on the driveshaft seems to be the main difference, but the tripod / spider was also a different size, so the internals of the shaft are different
All the dimensions are given in the GSP catalogue

Which can be downloaded here

That's better then link works

Thank you koalar, we don't have Evri here, best I could find was An Post 20.70EUR so I'd be 30c out of pocket 😭
I did think of offering it on here, but again it'd probably be cheaper for those in the UK to buy a new one than pay postage.
We have a good 'free to a good home' local group so I'll chuck it on there :)

In other exciting news...
...the knocking on full lock that made me suspect my old CV joint has disappeared now I've put it back together!

So it seems I don't need it anyway!

Maybe it was the old dog bone I changed at the same time that was causing all that.

This is the CV joint I suspected, worn due to boot failure. Maybe it's not so bad after all.

Ah, sorry, didn't make it clear, I'd already done that back in June this year.

Took both driveshafts apart to replace all boots (one had split) and investigate causes of knocking noise.

Discovered that one worn CV joint.

Packed with fresh grease and replaced, knocking was still there.

Now the knocking has gone after failing to replace the inner CV joint but replacing the dog bone. So I guess that was it all along.

Symptoms were: knocking only on full lock (sounded like on every wheel revolution, near the front on one side), then later started knocking when coming off throttle (sounded very different, from under the car, not wheel speed related) which is when I suspected the rear engine mount.
