My 4x4 has had a replacement engine as the last owner discovered a knock at the bottom end. He still has the old engine.
My question is: What gives the 4x4 the extra 5BHP? Is it the cyclinder head or carbs?

Different camshaft profile;) and some little carburettor mods!

You may find the electronic distributor* contributes too - even if it is just by keeping the timing spot on...

*AFAIK a standard fitting on the 4x4

For the details take a look at this page:

I can't really translate it:(
But the torque and BHP numbers make sense.

It's interesting looking at the engine speed for maximum torque (and the value): the 45 BHP has more at a lower engine speed - easier to drive.

ISTR my CLX has its maximum torque figure at a higher speed than the CL (comparable speeds to the figures on the site above) - and the CL is much more fun to drive.

For technical data about "our" engine you can refer to this other page... http://www.fiatpanda.itgo.com/htmlfire/schedatecnica.htm

the only difference is the Marelli integrated management, with no distributor:p!
