20vt engine in Alfa 145

20vt engine in Alfa 145

A lot of us do it just to see if it can be done, and to be different

6speed box will bolt onto the 16vt but not onto the chassis, so you cant fit that. sorry.

At least not without a custom gearbox mount.

The Q2 can be made to fit and it is the same as the alfa but has a LSD so is quite handy as standard.

avanti will do a gearbox and lsd for around £1200 and that will make a differnce

paul you can fit it you just need a welder and a bit of know how/crazyness :)

trust me you wont need more than a 5 speed box you will be doing way more than double the motorway speed limit before you hit the rev limiter in 5th :)

if you can get a 6speed box to fit then do that and get the Q2 diff. theres plenty of praise about the Q2 over on AO forum and for that price its a bargain!!

6 speed is usually said to improve "driveability" from what I gather.

Would it be possible to fabricate a custom bracket to make the box fit or is it def' a weld job?

you need to weld to fabricate the front engine mount thats what i meant.

basically on the 20v the engine is wider because of the extra cylinder meaning when the box is put on a 16v 4 cylinder the mount is ending up further into the bay rather tan on the chassy rail/leg.

to rectify the problem you need to make a new mount which will require welding and boxing in to make it strong enough to take the engine weight and the and the torq shift of the engine under acceleration. if the mount broke it woud be likely that a sump on ground at speed meaning engine dead scenario could happen

id go with what ASH said mate the 5 spead with a better final drive and a LSD would be just as good if not better, a 6 spead box is alot of money to ****up init lol

you could fit a cosworth engine if you want to fabricate mounts ash.

6speed boxs are better then the 5speed but wouldnt pay the extra £400 for the privalige.

even with a 6speed the top speed is in 5th, 6th is only for fuel economy really. my LE is noticeably better on fuel then the previous 20VT.

I have thought about the Q2 but the Viscous coupling isnt that bad to justify it imo.

Ok, so I reckon the 16vt with 5spd box is the way to go.

Have people also tried to swap both anti-roll bars and rear suspension from the coupe?

Why would you want to swap the rear susp? The basic suspension is the same and having a different ARB could potentially make the handling worse. The 145 and coupe have different weight distributions which affects what the suspension does.

Because if I get a coilover kit i needed to know if i could get a coupe set or if I would have to get coupe fronts and 145 backs ( I didn't know if the rear setup was the same as 145).

There is a fair bit of roll on a 145, even when lowered so i though the copue arb would be a good upgrade rather than spending big bucks on aftermarket 145 set.

The rear is the same on all the Tipo platform cars and the 'coilover' kits don't replace the rear coil with shock next to it with a coilover, its still a coil with a standard shock next to it.

Also the likes of FK only have 1 spring rate for the rear to cover the whole Tipo floorpan range. Its a bit too hard for the Bravo so mine now skips at the back.

The front suspension and engine weight are the determining factor. You're planning on putting in a heavier engine.

I was planning on getting fully adjustable suspension. at the mo i have Fk shocks and springs on my 145 but it sits a little too low so I want a bit more adjustment.

the standard coupe front shocks and springs are what you will need without any arguement ask AJ ;). they are easily as good as a set of eibachs on the standard 145.

the anti roll bar on the coupe and the bravo is the same i have both sitting in the garden if you want me to take a picture to prove it.

as for the rear suspension you can fit the coupe standard springs and achieve good results. also fitting the full coupe suspension setup gives a pretty nice ride height. low enough to look good but high enough to take speed bumps. be warned the coupe suspension is quite hard compaired to the standard 145/bravo setup.

My FK's are oem replacements (but drop the car).

I think AJ put the FK springs on the front with standard coupe shock. guess he left the back with the FK setup.

anyway, from what everyone is saying sounds like I can just buy some coupe adj suspension when/if I want to adjust ride height,

yep dont forget that once you have changed the subframe and the wishbones you will need to be using the the coupe top mounts

I will say i would rather have a 20vt then a 16vt, the 16vt is more prone to chucking its belts off and alot of the engines (not all, but its rare t find a good one) are dogs due to age and lack of care. generally speaking the 20vts are in better shape.
