Hello!

I've had an issue today with my Panda, their seems to be a grinding noise, metal scraping kind of sound when I set off and drive in first and reverse. I've not had this before and I've driven it about 60 miles today and any gear above second their isn't any noise or issue. Car hasn't had any work done on it recently so not sure what's changed.

The noise seems to be coming from the passenger side and started when I checked before when I lifted the gear to stick it into reverse.

Sorry for the vagueness.

Thank you.

How would I access this part? I've absolutely no knowledge of cars, driven for less than a year!

Thank you.
If you are not confident with jacking up the front of your car then I strongly suggest asking someone who is. With the front of the car raised the wheels can be spun by hand and any noise from the brake area will be obvious. Even then the wheel will need to be removed to find the exact cause.

After a drive, carefully touch each of the four brakes if you can through the wheels.

Take care, can be very hot, especially if a brake is binding.

If one brake is hotter than the others then it's binding slightly which can cause this kind of noise. Usually caused by rusty build-up on front calipers or rear drums.

Any further investigation would mean jacking up the car and removing a wheel, only do this with someone who knows how to do it safely.

If it's come on as suddenly as you seem to be suggesting then something, like a stone, between the disc and dust guard or even between the disc and caliper is highly likely. It could also be a brake pad worn down to the metal backing but I'd expect the noise to vary depending on whether you were braking or not if it's a pad.

If a wheel bearing is badly enough worn to allow the hub to rub it would have to be very well worn so I'd expect you to have been hearing "rumbly" worn wheel bearing noises before it gets to that point.

I agree the car needs to have that wheel jacked up and, initially, the wheel spun by hand to see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from. Probably then the wheel will need to be removed to narrow this down further and rectify the problem. If you've never jacked up a car before it's worth being aware they tend to fall off the cheap jack that comes supplied with the car rather easily so don't put any part of your body, not even a hand, under the car or between the tyre and road surface. It's very likely that the wheel will need to come off to sort this and, if it's a wheel bearing - which I think less likely - then you'll need someone, probably a garage or mobile mechanic - to fix it. A wee stone between the disc and dust guard is sortable in minutes but a workshop will probably have a minimum time charge, typically half an hour or an hour's labour. Don't go to a main agent for this, it'll COST! A reliable wee family garage or even a friend with a bit of knowledge (someone who does their own oil changes etc) especially if it's just a wee stone, would be a good choice but if you don't have a trusted garage already then ask around friends and neighbours for recommendations. If you're lucky this should be pretty cheap to sort out. Good luck
