Hello so last year I bought a replacement rear silencer and it knocked on the chassis or somewhere else, no good so returned and put the original exhaust back on

Today I went to ECP and bought a klarius one which is different but it still knocks! not as bad as previous one though.

What’s the deal with these, is OE replacement the only way?

Put new exhaust rubbers on last year aswell so they shouldn’t be at fault.

It does seem the hangers on the exhaust seem to different on aftermarket ones.

Just wondering if anyone else had this same issue or any idea why it’s doing the knocking

Yep same issue but I bought two different makes further front and rear which made it worse, I found where it joins there is quite a degree of "play" where you can slide it in and out altering the shape, it did knock, if I remember I worked out where it hit and used a bit of old rubber hanger cable tied in place no knock ever again, might have been one of the end hangers hitting the bodywork for aft.
This is the reason I always bought a genuine Honda exhaust never an issue but at a price!

I’ve been out shaking the exhaust and I think it’s the hanger hitting against the plastic wheel arch liner.

Sometime in the week I’ll take the wheel off and remove the liner then go up the road as I have handy speed bumps to test on.

It’s the only place it can possible be hitting that I can tell as I’ve tried lifting the exhaust up vigorously and I can’t get it near the chassis at all.

If it’s silent I’ll just have to cut a bit of the wheel arch liner so it can’t foul it, but new exhaust is leaking on the joint a tad so no doubt exhaust off again and use exhaust paste grrr

I had real issues sealing the slide section eventually I put two small strips over the slots in the outer section under the clamp
What strips did you use? The cars having an MOT this Saturday so if they mention it I might ask them to put some paste or whatever as they may do that for free, if not your method will work

Aftermarket exhausts are not as accurately made, unfortunately.. I had constant aggro' with different pipes on the Younger Mrs S' Cinquecento. Each new pipe I changed, over the years, affected the shape of the exhaust and I was continually adjusting it.

In my experience, Bosal fit was pretty immaculate, Klarius is not bad but not great. B&M not quite as good as Klarius but a lot cheaper.

I fitted a stainless steel system last year I did have so grief with the back box as the hanger on the box (right side) was far too inward and wouldn’t fit the hanger properly so had to Bend it outward with a huge ring spanner and heat!

The join section has 2 clamps on as first time it moved and was hitting the spare wheel well side!

When I do have to renew ….. I’m buying OEM and painting it not bothering with aftermarket again!

If it's stainless it's should outlive the rest of the car unless it's crack's due to catching on something

Ah so I took the wheel arch liner off, it’s not that.

I then noticed the left rear passenger side suspension strut was marked, so I put some red rubber grease on it then I bounced in the car then looked at the back of the exhaust and red rubber grease on that. BTW the car is a 1.2 pop totally standard so not lowered in anyway

So the exhaust box is too long grr, how are they selling these exhausts if it doesn’t fit, my mind is boggled.

Rather than messing about with aftermarket does anyone know where I can get a genuine exhaust from? If my memory serves me when I rang the local dealership I’m sure they said something like £180 not fitted which is insane.

I then found a website selling genuine parts but I can’t for the life of me find it again

£240 from shop 4 parts plus delivery genuine front and rear sections
I only need the rear section but that’s the website I found previously as it’s £102.

I’ll ring my local dealer tomorrow for a laugh/be insulted/be surprised then purchase from here if cheaper :D

If the silencer is just tapping... you could get a big screwdriver or chisel to use as a drift, get someone to hold the silencer and then just whack the drift with a big hammer, to put a dent into the silencer, for some clearance.

That would work but as it’s brand new I don’t want to do that, in fact the new exhaust is coming off this evening and old one back on (hopefully it passes MOT) then return new one to ECP

Rang my local dealership £221 for rear exhaust and that’s part alone :eek: I said it’s a fiat not a Ferrari

What year is your Pop?

A Bosal silencer is around half the OE price and in my experience the fit is generally faultless.

Fiat 500 1.2 uses either;

art. 148-253 ("Pop"/plain tipped) or 148-219 ("Lounge"/chrome tipped), if you have system 28226 or;

art. 148-193 ("Pop") or 148-183 ("Lounge") if you have system 01510

See:

and;

The difference is the middle pipe by the looks of it.

Don't go by the production year. The Younger Mrs S' 1.2 Pop is a 2013 but it has the 01510 system (which Bosal says is up to April 2012). Just go by the shape of the components.

I’ve got a 2009 1.2 well the wife has.

Those links you gave I’m unable to view them but I remember creating an account a while ago whilst looking so I’ll have another look.

As I’m rather tired of removing then buying and it not fitting, can you remember if the bosal exhaust is nearly identical to the OE exhaust? In my mind the bosal will be exactly like the klarius and same issue where it’s oval shape and longer than OE

Buy the whole exhaust middle and rear just in case its the middle that's not quite right bet the flexible is not great too ?
The middle pipe is fine actually, well very rusted but no holes and flexi looks decent too.

I rang mopar yesterday and they rang my dealer from Italy it seems and probably told them off as they’ve now said genuine one is £121.03 so I’ll be buying it from dealer now
