Technical 2006 Scudo - Battery light on and very heavy steering - connected?

Hi, so I’ve just bought a slightly ‘battered’ Scudo (2006)… picked it up and drove lovely.
Parked overnight and drove a 300 mile round trip, again driven well. Apart from the last 10 miles… battery light illuminated and have lost steering (it will turn but extremely difficult!)…
Possible causes?
