So 3 garages later and 800 quid worse off i have been told that nobody knows whats wrong with my fiat grande punto, apparently they will just have to start replacing things willy nilly till they find the problem..... next big problem is that they want to replace the calculator for the injection system? does anyone know where this is located? im looking at a bill of a 1000ish quid, id rather try nd replace it myself and i've heard you can buy them pre programmed... if someone could start to shed some light on this for me i would appreciate it so so so much.... i have nearly finished tearing out all my hair!
thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

symptoms list:
feels like it almost wants to stall at tick over
sounds like an old diesel tractor when accelerating
using enormous amounts of petrol
does'nt like cold starting
engine lights on permantly

allready changed:
coils pack and plugs
temerature sensor
full diagnostic on wiring faults (no faults)
:bang:

Hi.and welcome :)

Are they what the 'experts' have changed..??

Lights on permanently isnt any form of misfire.. so plugs and points are not at fault.

Where are you based?

Access to MultiECUScan software would be the best starting point.. along with readimg the GUIDES and FAQs at top of Grande section.

Give us some history..

Owned it long..how many trouble free miles?

Happen suddenly.. or weird stuff creeping in over months.??

You can do also many things with injectors - 1st measure they resistance (appr 15 ohms each), then unplug one by one on idle - to check what happen to engine. You can remove injectors & check them at home (a lot of viedos on YouTube) or give it to professional service for real pro injector test

Agreed.

But overfuelling should seem BETTER with cold starts.

I suspect fundamental sensor feedback giving lousy fuelling.

There has been NO MENTION of ANY fault codes.. from jandy78

the only fault code was from the temp sensor, replaced that still no joy and still the same fault code for the sensor>>>>>>>>>>>>?

Hi
Yes experts changed all thé parts and did thé diagnostics.
Im actually living in France so need english advice as thé garages hère only give info about how much its gonna cost!.
Ive had thé car 5 years and its been a pain since thé start .. i replaced thé famous electric steering myself which was a breeze and all parts like suspension breakes exhaust etc i do myself. Thé problem with thé cold starting problem dates atleast 3 years.... No ones could fix it so i just learned to live with it..
. Im sûre its all connectés somehow!

This is pretty common (worldwide) problem (rough idle, noisy cold starts and so on), unfortunately.
And no one really knows what's wrong with this new FIRE engines family. :(
Probably it's a design flaw/screw-up (thanks to Euro4 and 5 emissions limits). (n)
Plus "planned obsolescence" kosher business strategy.

For €50 the MES FULL software is very worthwhile.. but you can get going for half that with the free version and cheap cables.

Feed back between the sensor and ECU will be readily viewable.

All air and fluid..incl fuel .. temps.

Ive not owned this motor so cannot offer specifics Im afraid..

But its been around for 14 years.. so plenty of relevant info on here. :)

Bon Chance

It is so dramatically simple to connect the MES on your car ! For 50€ you'd be able to check everything that happens in your ECU and plot all curves in real time while you're running the car.
For less than a garage will charge for one "passage à la valise", you'd be able to know what happens and clearly see if they tell you bull**** :)

And by the way, the MAP sensor is a good candidate, since it also checks the AIR temperature, if you'd MESed the ECU, you could have seen its reading...

If someone here helped You fix -or better, understand- your issue, hit the thanks icon @ bottom right corner, it's free and makes us feel helpy ;-)

never hear of ecu on 1.4 grande going bad, just had a similar problem on 1.4 grande, car would stall on lights and when you press gas pedal it wouldnt react, tester showed gas pedal, changed that and it was same, changed throttle body and problems went away

best to plug it to tester and type which error codes you get
