Briefly ... the glow plugs not working. On the relay i'm reading 12v on pin 3 when ignition on and the plug disconected. I plug it back in and the 12v disappears. As this should be a direct feed from the ignition switch I'm flumoxed!! Could it be the switch?
PS I've tried a new relay unit.

I do not have the pin numbers, but is it like the blue relay in the photo?

Yes it is. Whats the smaller relay do next to it?
DIY starter solenoid relay. The engine in my 1990 Talbot Express had turbo close to starter at front. When no longer new had starter problems when engine hot. Solenoid was not fully engaging, but never any problem with cold engine. From reports on another forum, my experience was not unique.

in my experience this normally suggests there is a high resistance in the feed i.e. when no current drawn you read an open circuit 12v. When you attempt to draw current the supply drops off. Can you go back to the supply source e.g. a fuse and find out where in the supply it is dropping off?
This reminds me of a fault on a friends tow car caravan combination many years ago where the fridge supply circuit showed 12v only to drop off when the fridge was connected. The fault turned out to be the supply fuse which had blown at some time and had been replaced by the silver foil from a cigarette packet.
