1987 Selecta

Hi there!

This is my first entry to the site so wish me luck!! I have a 1987 Selecta automatic that appears to have a diccy Carb!! It used to loose power and cut out, I'd wait for a few mins and then it would be ok again. Finally took it to the garage, they said it was the carb. So cut a long story short (and a few £'s later!), they said one of the jets was stuck and blocked and had a great trouble getting it out before replacing it to get it going again!! Since then it is awful! In neutral and park it sounds like I have my foot on the accelarator all the time - when I start her up you can smell the fuel HUGELY! It has gone up to costing me 16p per mile and sounds terrible.. worse thing is that it still has the old quirk when she has been exposed to the cold!! Does anyone have any advice or a contact where I can get a new carb??

Hi there and thankyou! It is a 1987 Fiat Uno Selecta automatic 1100....

Being a Uno Selecta that means it has the older 1116cc ohc engine rather than the FIRE 1108cc engine that the Panda Selecta had. Unfortunately Haynes doesn't cover this model and I can't find any information in Porters either. I suspect it may have it's own carburettor or a modified version to that fitted to the manual transmission models.

However, it does sound to me as if the garage has buggered it up and charged you for doing so. The symptoms you describe sound like big air leaks or leaking diaphragms, which are quite likely to happen if someone 'tries' to clear a blockage as per this garage... It is also quite likely that the auto transmission uses vacuum pipes connected to the carburettor for various reasons and some may be damaged or not connected properly.

What I suggest you do is visit the Classic Panda section and ask the members there if there are any additional vacuum pipes connected to both carburettor and transmission. Though the Panda Selecta uses a different engine the Selecta transmission is pretty much the same. Unfortunately the carburettors are different between the Panda and Uno.

thank you so much for your advice and help - i've posted your question in the classic panda section! It seems a shame that my car may have been buggered so easily when it used to run so smoothly - only done 68.000miles! By any chance do you know of any garages/mechanics in the Bristol/Bath area (or within 1hour radius) that would give it the care and attention it would need? Either to fix it or to know when to let it go?? Thanks again for your help so far - good not to feel so lost as a virgin mechanic!! elise x
