I have a 2005 Petrol 1.4 Dualogic. Only 27,000 miles. Driven sedately with Selenia 20K on its last service (I have the bottle with what's left still) it has gone from the top of the dipstick to about 20% from the bottom of the hashed area in 4,400 miles. According to the book that equals about 0.8 of a litre used. I cannot believe this consumption on a newish low mileage car can be correct.

What could be causing this? The car has never had a hard life and I am no peddle to the metal driver!

Any oil leaks, valve cover seems to be a favorite on the punto engines. I have had my idea for about 18 months and luckily have not had to top it up between changes, oil used 10-40 semi synth from anywhere any make, did not use selenia even when i had the alfa, i did use a good semi synth that was a lot less than selenia.

I was advised to check the exhaust to see if there was soot or oil deposits at the end of the tail pipe. It is totally clean - absolutely nothing there. Where can the oil go? I will see if I can check the top of the engine.

I had the car up on the stands today and can now see that there is oil around the end of the engine where it joins the bell housing. A mechanic says it is likely to be the crankshaft oil seal. I guess this needs fixing. From what I've read this is a big job.
