I am writing the feature for Auto Italia magazine and also source the cars. We actually have four other Fiat press cars for this event but they don't have a 1.4 available on the press fleet - hence my request.
Hopefully regular readers of the magazine will have spotted my contributions over the years.

Doesn't every sale transaction through autotrader.co.uk or Pistonheads (for example) involve an invitation to meet a strnager to see a car in an unknown location?
Ofcourse it can.
But would you let your 17 year old daughter go to see a stranger from the internet with 2 thousand pound in her back pocket, without making sure she was taking precautions.
I'm a fairly big guy with a variety of martial arts training and I still don't go to adverts like that by myself.

I did go to a small meet that Rob organised in early 2010 but the idea of being beaten to death with iDevices by 500 owners simply doesn't appeal

It was all well intentioned and there was not even the hint of an accusation or anything, just well intentioned suggestions of caution to these sorts of offers from Venters.
I think some people take things a little too seriously on here and whilst we should always strive to give people the best information and so on, we should also make every effort not to make people paranoid about stuff whether it be meeting someone off the inernet or fitting a particular brand of tyres or brake pads or headlamp bulbs or whatever..... Different people on here have different levels of knowledge and confidence and whilst some people will tell you to get bent if you tell them they're going to die without winter tyres or ESP or whatever, some people will crap themselves and make a rash decision or just never be comfortable in their car.
I met the wife off a forum. She picked me up at Heathrow and drove me home to North Wales. Either of us could have been an axe murderer, but two sensible people chose to meet in a nice crowded place and it all went well
I've met a good 20 or 30 people off the net and whilst I've met a few strange people and one girlfriend who turned out to be bonkers, I've never met anyone scary and I've made some really fantastic friends
