Technical 0.9 twinair 105BHP MPG

Hello all,

I’ve got a 16 plate fiat 500C twinair 0.9 105BHP and I seem to get rubbish MPG in it. Average around 33MPG if I’m lucky around town and about 38/40MPG long motor way driving and that’s on ECO mood.

Why would this be as it states urban is 54.4 and I’m no where near that.

It also fails on exhaust emissions being to high and they have to accelerate it for it to pass? the other half read that there should be different peramiters for it to be tested on?

The 75 mpg claimed is seldom met..

But most out of town driving gives 50+ in our larger bodied 85 TA's

Unfortunately, I can’t give any advice on the emissions side of your query, but my 105S twinair achieves nowhere near the claimed mpg’s either.

I’m sure one of the resident experts will be along shortly - and may have some pointers for you.

I have hit 99 on the ecorive thingy, with the Sport button on and generally get just over 50mpg on a good run, which is a mix of A roads/country lanes. I’ve not reset the mpg computer since I got it and it’s slowly crept up to where it is now.

Have you tried resetting the mpg computer and doing a longish journey to see what mpg it reads? Mine showed an average of 30mpg when I got it and I suspect it had only done very short town journeys before I bought it (67 reg with 12k on the clock when I got it. It’s now done a touch over 17k miles)

My temp gauge sits at the half way point.

Several 2012 panda TAs have had MOT emissions hassles..

My panda and punto have been fine

How often is the oil changed.. ?
spark plugs need changing a lot more frequently than you would hope ( they work hard..)

Fiat's official economy figures for the 500 are pure fantasy; real world economy gets nowhere close and this has been reported pretty much constantly both here and in the motoring press generally since the engine was launched.

Most folks reckon the fuel consumption is acceptable, given the performance, and almost nobody chooses the TA engine for economy; in real world ecodriving, the 1.2 will beat it hands down with ease, despite the official figures suggesting otherwise.

The 500 isn't particularly aerodynamic and economy on the motorway is hugely speed dependent; if you want to get anywhere close to the published figures you'll need to keep below 55mph at all times. Selecting eco mode makes little if any difference to economy when travelling at a steady speed, but it will improve economy (at the expense of performance) in urban driving.

Most folks who drive in a 'normal' manner generally report average mpg figures in the lower half of the 40's; highly spirited drivers get less. What you've posted doesn't in itself suggest there's anything wrong with your car.

Temp gauge is done. Goes up at the normal rate and then sits on half ?*

I drive it nicely, I don’t think I could drive it any better, lol

Oil and speaks were changed a few months ago (this year in lock down)

On researching it mentions high omissions due to o2 sensor which I presume is another name for lumber?

I get that some cars are not fuel economic but my Audi TT 245bhp 1.6 done better MPG than this lol

Lamda sensor is indeed controlling the fuelling of the motor..

This is an underlying issue

Address this and your car will run better

They mentioned an MOT emissions fail

My Punto TA is of the 85 tune

It has 3 drivers.. 1 gets 40

One gets 45 and another gets 55

With the cruise on I see poor mpg figures.. then realise ECO has been switched off.. it then goes from 48 to 56 mpg

Not its not going to fix the energy crisis.. but it helps

Driving style required is 'Different'

Its taken our 'panda driver' a full year to adapt

MPG in a panda TA gone from 42 to 58

Basics would be 3 x 10 miles per day average.

Then any local trips during my days off to places like Tesco family etc would be less than this ?

Don’t often do long motorway journeys. ?

Current miles is 18252.

On the MOT on the 7th March 2020 was 15518 miles so since then I have only done 2734 miles since March.

Not sure of that helps at all. What could be the cause of over fueling ? :-(

A sooty exhaust is caused my too much furl passing through the motor..

This can have several causes :

A bad sensor .. telling the ECU it needs more fuel

A 'cold engine'.. needs more fuel

An air leak.. the sensor sees air .. and adds fuel attempting to maintain the correct Lambda ratio


Get that sensor clean.. brake cleaner spray is ok on the metal dome.. just be careful with the witing.. and make sure it goes in tight.. you need an airtight seal

His gave it a clean... and I have just screen shot and sent it to him what you posted above ? I started it up and it runs lol, I’ll soon find out on my way into work tomorrow morning? Lol

Shall I reset the trip and see how I get on? I have a long drive next Friday to the other side of London so will have a half decent run too too and back.

I have ran diesel cars for the last 30 years.

When it came to mot time, I always got told, to give the car a good thrash just before the test to make sure it is up to temperature, and to use a quality fuel additive like Millers, which will help at the emissions test. So far, it has never failed.


Now. I can't say that the same procedure would work on a petrol, but the relatively small cost might be worth a try. Millers also do petrol additives which, funnily enough, I use to use on my Mini race car some years ago.

It’s all been reset as the battery was taken out to un clip the sensor. This morning on my way into work the average MPG was flicking between 27MP to the 60MPG.... once it’s levelled off will be interesting to see if a clean has made a difference, and work out if there is another issue to cause it to over fuel - I’m hoping this has done the trick ?*

Thought I would give an update so far since the sensor has been clean. It’s showing around 46.6MPG and so far got 157 miles to half a tank of petrol!!

Does that sound more reasonable??

I’ll see how it goes on the rest of the tank and continue to monitor ...

I was disappointed with 56 last week

Having checked and reinflated the tyres.. much happier with 62 on the return trip

Thats 110 miles in 2 hours.. so steady

Jealous with your 62 mpg lol I’ve been driving nicely to get 46MPG lol

I’m just wondering if I will have to replace the lumba sensor ... but don’t want to do that if it’s another issue causing it to become dirty quicker then causing it to use more fuel. So far so good I presume ?* Well compared to before anyhow
