ah rite,(y)

it deffo wasnt paper so alls good ihope,

the only part ididnt use out of the kit was the headgasket, engine specialist who did the work on the C/h ,Skim/valves etc..said fling h/g use this, ithink it must be uprated M/L.

Well, it turns out I have two oil leaks... -- and a water leak...!

The top oil leak is from the lower of the cylinder head gaskets (the one above the HG) -- so I was nearly right.... The good news is, the cylinder head doesn't have to come off to replace it -- just the top casing and camshaft. [The current one -- what's left of it -- is cork: but will be replaced with gasket sealant. (My mechanic used to be an automatic gearbox specialist for JLR: so I trust him to come up with sensible solutions... -- he's never let me down yet....)]

The crankshaft seal is also shot: so is being replaced, along with the crankshaft pulley: as the woodruff key that holds it to the crankshaft has cracked. :(

The water leak is the usual water rail o-ring failure; and is currently very minor -- however, might as well get it fixed, with everything else....!

Although I love my Punto dearly, remind me to get an 8v, next time.... :bang:

Iwouid of asked why a cork gasket was used first time round,

That must of been one of the cheaper gasket kits,

Good luck with it anyway, ihope it aint too costly for you to have repaired, (y)

still got aslight oil leak on mine, need to order new sump again,
if it aint that its getting scrapped,

Just to bring this thread to an end (I hope), this is the work the Punto ended up having done -- but not necessarily in this order: :)
  • Camshaft carrier to cylinder head seal oil leak: cork gasket (which was useless...) replaced with sealant.
  • Crankshaft oil seal (timing belt end) leak: new seal and crankshaft drive gear.
  • Water rail leak (it was starting to perish; and the O-ring was shot...) -- rail and O-ring both replaced.
  • Oil had only just been replaced; but coolant was flushed, refilled and bled.
  • Bits of engine and loom etc. dismantled and re-fitted.
  • Engine degreased.
Mrs homeward collected the car, this morning, after it had been test-driven "at full operating temperature" (and whilst her Mk3 Panda was being serviced, and having new front brake pads, and new rear tyres fitted...): and reports that all is well. (y)

I therefore ended up collecting her Panda: which, apart from the slightly bouncy ride, I still enjoy driving -- especially the higher seating position: which makes getting in and out (when you're an old cripple, like me) a lot easier; and gives a better view of the road, etc..

Phew.

Tbh when ifitted mine, iwas half tempted to use both,

eg the gasket and wyns instant gasket, iwasnt sure it was worth the gamble so
i put the gunk away,

good luck with it homeward, im pretty sure your mech wouid of done this before
or wouidnt of took the risk, (y)

still got the leak to sort on mine im a hoping its just the sump,
if not then ihave to strip it all down again, more money to throw at it :bang:

its not a bad leak just drips but idont like the idea of oiling up the roads its not nice for our two wheel'd friends out there, :(
