This is the culprit bend

The road was just like a sheet of glass, had no chance.

You can see where I hit the curb, bounced off it and then waited for the AA truck.

£250 insurance excess, no courtisy car till their engineer signs for the work to be done.

:cry::cry::cry:

Sorry to see and here this, at least the car can be fixed, just be thankful that you are ok.

Hopefully the car won't take to long to be repaired.

Yeah, I am OK and nobody else was involved so just take it on the chin and wait for it to be repaired now, hope it doesn't take too long either.

Will miss it thou.

Just had a call from the Fiat garage and they have done the estimate.

£1482, £190 labour, rest is parts

The insurance company has passed it to commence work.

New wheel and tyre and everything under that arch.

4 wheel alignment.

And a courtesy car.

Could have it back early next week.

Feel a lot better now
. :)

Snow chains work on ice?

When you get it back I would replace the drivers side tyre aswell, the insides look a bit bald.

Mines are exactly the same, getting new ones fitted on Thursday.

Yeah I noticed that today, I'm wondering if that was a factor in the situation.

Will deffo get the other one replaced at the same time.

Glad its getting a new wheel, that one had a nasty scuff on it
.

shame about the car, but an OMG at the quote. No wonder everyones insurance is high if places are bumping the costs up like that.

There is no way in hell a pair wishbones, pair of front struts, wheel, driveshaft and allignment should cost that much

Now what is it people say about ESP....

Hope you get it sorted soon though!! Looks not too good atm :(

People laughed at me for putting on Winter tyres. I would highly recommend them though... Get a set of steelies for the Winter...

I run a body shop myself so trust me, they won't be bumping the prices up - they'll never get it past the engineer. They will however be changing far more than what you've mentioned. The engineer will want anything that may have had the slightest chance of being bent under that arch changed, so the shopping list will look more like:

Wheel
Tyre
Shock
Spring
Steering knuckle
Bearing
Lower arm
Anti roll bar and bush
Drop link
Drive shaft

That lot will easily come to the price quoted, and the fact they've quoted only £190 to fit say to me that at a main dealers labour rate they've only asked for three hours tops.

Unfortunately it's another reminder that summer tyres and cold weather don't mix, regardless of how fast/slow you're going, this is always a possibility.

The important thing however is that nobody was hurt and it can all be repaired easily.

ESP wouldn't have helped in this situation as it can't create grip, only modulate what's there in the first place. In this situation the available grip (on summer tyres) was nil. Eagle F1s are summer tyres and will not work in these conditions regardless.

Spot on - fit winters in winter, or if you choose not to, accept that this sort of thing may well happen.

ESP would have made no difference, it'll just make you understeer into whatever you are going to hit. The car didn't spin into the kerb did it?

Still at least damage isn't too bad.

No spin, just slid into the kurb.

Wheels turned to take the turn as I do everyday, just didn't know about the sheet glass ice.

I thought the damage looked horrific lol

Never had winter tyres on any other car, I'll put it down to just one of them things today.

I didn't think you had spun for a minute. Not much you can do if you hit ice winter tyres or not. Still at least there is no bodywork damage and its limited to the strut, well lower arm.

It just really isn't bad enough weather wise where i live to consider the outlay and expense of winter tyres. I had a little bit of slip sliding today on the way to work but only because I opted to take a back road to cut out a bit of traffic. All I found was it was just very easy to spin whatever wheel had least traction, the car didn't move about much, but i was going in a straightline so relatively easy to control. I did notice when I reached the end of the road though that the ABS was having a fit and I wasn't stopping as quickly as I thought I would, but not enough to be a problem really.
