The part fits up the pipe, but I don't know whether it needs some kind of bracket or what

A few Alfa Romeo Mitos blew up a couple of years back, there was a big recall order. Alternator and drive belts froze up on cold mornings, lots of smoke and screeching.
I got it from www.alfaworkshop.co.uk for about a tenner, it arrived really quickly too. It's under the Mito section, not a problem as it's the same platform as the GP and the Corsa D
You take the old pipe off and put the new one where it was!

nip the old one to distort it and pull out....
if you struggle re fitting the new one bit of car shampoo on it to slip it up

Neither. It goes towards the passenger side at 90degrees.
