no need to take wheels off

ok i can see 2 srews at the top under the boot and 4 underneath, is that all of them. I just ordered a sensor kit, i am a bit scared to drill my bumper. can anyone recomend where to mount the sensors?? position 1, 2, or 3 (shown below)? Also where is the best place to tap into the reverse light wires?

yeah i was going to get one of those but i changed my mind for one of these as it was cheap and has a display. I guessed it would be easy to identify the wires once the bumper is off, but i thought maybe i should make the connection somewhere inside the car. Any ideas where to mount the sensors? i hope it all goes well, if so i will have done it for £25 and i have seen some people on here quoted £250

once you have the bumper off you will see where the fog and reversing light enters the boot through a grommet take the boot liner out (1x big torx and 2x self tappers and plenty of those plastic clips) and you will find it on the inside..
good stuff. Official thanks given! Does anyone know where i should mount the sensors though?? i am thinking i will do it under the reg plate as it wll look less intrusive but the bumper slants down slightly. If anyone has them fitted i would love to know where theirs are fitted. Where are the factory fitted ones mounted???

i heard the best place to fit them is where they would come as standard, if you get me. but is that just a single sensor? if it is ull want it in the middle i guess. what do you really need it for tho? you've got mirrors personally i think even £25 is a bit of a waste of money. but thats my opinion! :D

That doesnt really asnswer the question. Where do the standard ones go?

As for why i want them, try reversing into a double garage with a 35k merc next to you, its so tight i have to fold the mirrors in. Also i do a lot of parallel parking in town. Oh and i like gadgets

the GP manual actually show it should be mounted on top line of the plate, i believe if fou mount below the plate, you will have false signal as the height is less than 0.45m (at least that what was recommended on the sensors i bought...i also notice most all brand of sensor recommended 0.45m) if the position less than 0.45m, some sensor recomended to tilt the sensor 2 degree up ward to prevent the sensor sensing the floor/ground instead of the real object.

good luck, you still need some shot screw driver to unfasten the screw near the tyre even if you jack-up your car. that what i found out. as the distance between the tyre ang the bumper is too close.

i guess i dint! lol sorry dont really know how too explain it and cant seem to find many pics of them fitted have found this 1 and circled them as they are body coloured not brill but hopefully it will give you an idea. that makes perfect sence for getting them! in that case i would prob consider some too!

hope this is of some help atleast, although i know it wont be much

Ledgend!!! I didnt even consider putting them there! Official thanks given! Just out of curiosity, is that photo showing factory fitted ones? The manual (page 101) shows them a bit higher.

Cheers mate, i just checked and if i mount them under the plate they would only be about 42CM off the ground. The ones i bought have wedges to angle them up, still i might go for the above option. As for the short screwdriver, i dont have one so i will prob need to remove the wheels :(.

STOP!!!

You haven't taken the bumper off yet have you?

I fitted reverse sensors and certainly didn't take the bumper off  You can get to the reverse lamp really simply without taking it off.

Give me a minute, I'm going to change computers so I can talk you through it with pics.

LOL ok! No the kit arrives tomorrow, i was just trying to take it off now and failed cos i cant get to the ones in the arch. I dont see how i will fit them with the bumper on though, look forward to your explanation

Right, here we go...

First of all, open the boot and remove the carpet, undo the plastic panel shown below and remove. Now remove the spare wheel and the bracket that holds it place (Should be one nut). - If you have a sporting then just remove the bracket :p

You should be able to see a rubber grommet with a cable coming through, this house the reverse light cable, the number plate light cable, and the fog light cable.

Pull the rubber grommet out and you should now have access to the rear bumper.

Lie on the floor and get under the car (it doesn't have to be jacked up at all, but remember to put the handbrake on)
You can clearly see up behind the bumper and it is easy to tap into the wire coming out from the reverse lamp. Run the wire down from the grommet hole (make sure you put it through the grommet first ).

Now you'll find when the car is in reverse your sensors should bleep at you.

For drilling you can do this one of two ways, 1 is to feel around the bumper to locate the pre-marked holes, or do what I did and get some masking tape (may need two of you) and line it up with the top of your number plate and run it the entire length of the back of the car (example below - obviously it will wrap around the car unlike the paint edition :p ).

Stand back and confirm the tape is straight, now measure a certain amount away from the number plate surround, mimic again on the other side, then drill. Never drill the bumper from the back out as it will curve the plastic outwards.

Pop the sensors into the holes, feed the cables up the bumper to the grommet hole and then through the grommet (the grommet may need to be split slightly to allow for more wires, don't worry it is still very waterproof).

Hope this has helped a little but I have a headache so will re-read this when its gone, and amend the many mistakes I have made in my grammar and explanation

Tom

Thanks a million. great help and i much appreciate the time you have taken. I am thinking i will remove the bumper though to use the marks fiat has put there so i get it just right. The rest of your instructions are still very usefull. Not many mistakes at all :) So i should not drill from the inside of the bumper outwards?

which screws?

There are screws in the wheel arch that look like they have the bumper fixed. Another member said i need a short screwdriver to get these out. The only other screws i can see are 2 on the top and 4 underneath
