I really hope they don't do this o the 500 it looks Hidious and spoils the while retro thing, they should just bring the new UNO to the uk in 5 door along with the panda.

Is there any reason why you seem to refuse to post in English?

This might sound like a naive question - but why did the Fiat group cars (Lancia / Fiat / Alfa) rust?
Was it the quality of the metal and or was it not 'galvanised' properly.
Or is it that 'designs' have really improved where there's no water 'gathering' in particular parts of the body?
Maxi raised a good point about the Fords - in particular the Fiestas which were rust buckets (but kept driving). Triumph Heralds had problems with rusting floor pans (I remember the draughts that you got in the foot wells as a kid in an Uncles car!).
For some reason 'Fiats' seem to get that label - maybe it was because you couldn't drive them if the wings have falllen off as happened with the Betas !

Thanks for that RUI. I had a good laugh at the way the newscaster was pronouncing Lanchea - I cann't spell as good as jakedeano :D. In Ireland there was no buy back - if I had know that I could have changed my rusty beta coupe for a brand new one :). Too late now !

Haha, nice clip from way back when.

Like the close up of the scrapyard in Somerset with the big Alsatians outside, watch out sunshine!:D

Back to the original topic - am going to assume that there won't be anything forthcoming on the 4-door 500 front. Might even put a pound on it:cool:

Marchionne is to ****ing stupid to do it. Quite literally they just need to stretch the 500 and that's all. Meanwhile they're too busy putting Lancia badges on Chrysler crap........ because everyone in Europe LOVES Chryslers!!!!

Well...if you take a look at Chrysler UK's website, you'll see that there is a wide selection of cars for sale....

Although I don't personally agree with the move, I think Fiat want to try and give the Chrysler brand a boost, and they know that good small cars are in high demand.

Whether or not the British public will take to the Ypsilon as a Chrysler remains to be seen.

I would imagine there will be significant investment put into advertising and marketing though, quite frankly they are going to have to push it hard as no-one will know about it otherwise.

Just had a little look on fiatblog.nl http://www.fiatblog.nl/?p=10834 and there's an interesting piece about some shots that have been made up for the 500+ - the 4-door version.

Of course these are not official (they were done by a designer), but one of the posts has a nice link here to the 4-door version - if Fiat can make this I think it would look great!

I always think that if they made a 4 door that it'd sell well.

I totally agree Maxi.

I know there will always be the argument that the Panda is the 4-door, practical and significantly cheaper version which is already there, but I can't be the only one whose other half is not wholly convinced by the Panda's looks:D.

By the looks of it this design is another 30-40cm longer, but it doesn't make it look like a dog's dinner either IMO.

Come on Fiat, do the deed - you know you want to!:D

Yup. The one big complaint people always have with the 500 is space and rear headroom, this eliminates these issues and the styling still looks very 500, I doubt I'd be able to pick one of those out on the road from a few hundred metres and say whether it's a 4 door or 2 door.

I've been looking at the Ypsilon a bit more since you brought it to my attention on the FF. Initally I didn't like it but it's starting to grow on me. And it might sell in Ireland.

Unsure about the marketing of this in Italy - Fashion victim.

What I like about the 500 is that it only comes in 2 doors. My experience is that if a car comes in either a 2 or 4 door the 4 door is generally preferable and has a bigger re-sale market. I think of the 2 door 500 (cann't get my head around that) as a coupe and think of the reduced rear head room as acceptable.
I reckon that the 4 door would impact on sales of the 2 door 500. Has the MINI Traveller done any favours for the branding of the MINI. Will they come out with a Countryman next ?

Also if they do bring it out (which they probably will) - will they drop the 1.4 as they have done in the Ypsilon ?

Engines come from the 500, which means a 1.3-litre diesel, a 1.2-litre petrol, and the trick two-cylinder TwinAir – the 1.4 isn’t offered as it only makes up a tiny percentage of 500 sales so Lancia didn’t think there’d be a market for it.
.......our test route that predominantly involved sprinting around Turin we were hovering around 30mpg, a disappointment that we’ve also experienced in the 500 TwinAir.

be honest how many time did you hit F5 and play the intro again :p

That car is a victim of fashion, look again and you will see an Alpha front bolted to an Audi mid section and then to a Mini backend, very odd looking.

[edit] it's a Skoda Fabia gone under an italian knife... http://www.skoda.co.uk/GBR/newcars/fabia/Pages/Default.aspx

there's nothing Alfa, mini or Audi about that at all. Also, it's Alfa, not Alpha

yes alfa

As I said above, looking at the visible view from the front the car has 3 distinct sections, although the sides flow and bow like shaped steel of an Audi (see Audi a1) the overall shape is plagiarised, maybe that works for some people but not me. It may grow on me like fungus but I have some fiat 500 spray to deal with that.

I did not say that, quite the opposite I have the utmost respect for their fashion houses, but that car is butt ugly.

I've had to look to my OH for some fashion sense and then on the other hand I'm a good critic about her sense or taste in design. If you look at the fashion 'houses' or fashion cities of the world Milan has dropped from their no. 1 spot conceeding to New York.

Looking at some of the recent 'ideas' that come have come out of Milan in relation to some furniture designs with the 500 as an inspirational 'piece' - it's a design that has gone to far ...
http://topgearnew.blogspot.com/2011/04/salone-del-mobile-fiat-500-design.html
Who is responsible for the design as the custodian and 'developer' of the 500
http://webexpedition18.com/articles/industrial-design-of-fiat-500-through-the-decades/
and are they [still] based in Milan ?
In the name FIAT T standing for Torino and in the case of the MiTo Mi standing for Milan - it's quite obvious its 'emanating' from Milan.
I would agree with arorat about the 'look' of the Lancia but only on the 2 door - I've come accustomed to the 4 door. Looking through the archives the 500 - it has had 4 doors. So who I am to say that there shouldn't be a 4 door.
Is there a danger that I'd off load my current 2 door if a 4 door appeared on the roads ?
From a business perspective and with the current partnership with Chrysler it would appear that they are desperately trying to preserve themselves and need a longer-term strategy.
Came across this very interesting clip on the 'old' factory in Turin and it would appear that they was an 'opportunity' lost. I wonder whose decision was it to allow your competitor to use your factory for a film shoot and should it have been their own cars ? :(
