Hi All

My stilo 02 reg 1.6 petrol stilo has started cutting out and will not start right away but starts later on, no codes coming up as i've checked with my laptop and my fiat software i downloaded from here, noticed temp sensors reading high when engine cold

Any help appreciated

Its the engine coolant temp sensor that reads high, the car starts and idles ok for about 1 min then cuts out and will not restart for a while then it will start and do the same again, what should the temp sensor read via the diagnostic port on the laptop

What should it read?
Not with you there. It should read what the engine coolant temp is

The engine temp sensor is a negative coefficient resistor ie resistance goes down as engine temp rises. What does your dashboard engine temp tell you? Is it also showing higher than expected temps?

Temp gauge on dash shows normal apart from one time was trying to start after cutting out gauge went to max and go red light high temp

maybe barking up the wrong tree what else could it be, crank sensor? bad Earth?

Took crank sensor out and cleaned it still no joy still wont start, could it be a fuel level sensor

help please

Have you a starting or stalling problem? I don't think cleaning the crank sensor would help if it is faulty.. if you cannot start - check fuel pressure is present (easy to do on the fuel rail) then check there is a spark signal going to the coil (tester on the coil plug.. never remove and fire up the coil) if both things are a yes - it should start (unless engine holds no compression) if there is no spark.. suspect crank or cam sensor.. fuel level sensor is easy to check.. turn the key to normal position (to power up the electrics) look on the dashboard, specifically on the fuel level gauge.. if it moves to indicate the amount of fuel in the tank.. it is working..

The car will run and cut out and not restart for a while, where is the cam sensor located, how do i check the crank sensor is ok

I have had the laptop on and read all the sensors but dont really know what to look for to pin point a fault, no fault codes coming up or engine check light coming on the car is immac 02 1.6 with only genuine 30k miles on it

if it stalls then it is more likely to be the crank sensor (it needs to work for the car to run and start.. cam is only needed for the car to start.. though it is used later on.. the car will run without it) what you describe fits into is a classic crank sensor failure symptom..yes it could be other things.. but seeing as crank sensors are cheap.. i'd advise you replace it.. then see if the problem comes back (without any error codes this is what i’d do as other things would be much harder to test/consider.. so let’s hope you won’t need to)

How much later on, mins, hours? And when it starts is it fine then or does it then happen again?

Temp gauge on dash shows normal

Doesn't make sense, can you explain? The more accurate you can describe your symptoms then the better answers you're likely to get

Fitted a new Crank sensor still the same

the overheating i mentioned was when the battery was getting flat trying to start it threw up a overheat code for a moment

any more help please

Just checked for codes p0335 no signal from crankshaft sensor but have just fitted a new one, could it be corrosion on the ring

Help please

The rpm sensor should put out an ac voltage so either back probe the rpm sensor connector (ideally when it is starting and then when it's not starting to see the difference) or disconnect it and connect your multimeter directly to it at the connector. Put you multi meter on ac around one volt

If it's putting out an ac voltage then you know it's at least close enough to the pick up ring and sensing it and the problem is more likely between the connector and the ecu

If it's not putting out an ac voltge then check the air gap between the sensor and the pick up ring on the crank pulley

Thanks for all replies much appreciated help

Traced it to a dodgy wire that runs along the front manifold when you wiggle it the car will start the wire goes down near the top timing cover

what does this wire connect to
