hi, can someone please advise me whether when changing the cambelt on fiat punto 1.2, sx60. R reg..1997. do i need to change the fan belt also?

also what fog lamp do i need? i mean mines broken and ive seen lots on ebay for Mk1 punto's...would this fit?

please help.

thanks in advance

72k or 5 years for your cam belt but I wouldn't bother they hardly ever brake in fact in most countries fiat don't change them its not on the service schedule at all

also you have a safe engine so if it does brake it wont do any damage and a new one can be put on in 15 minutes at road side

what it is the top end of the fiat fire engines is soo light they dont wear the cam belt out

The above is true but I would still recommend you change it and the Fan belt at the same time could stop overgeating and killing the HG also change the tensioner at the same time (y)

For the sake of a few hours and 6oquid it's worth it :)

if you wait until it breaks it can snap off with a bang and take the crank position sensor wires etc into the lower crank, then you have a bigger headache to worry about.,

wish i had changed mine before it snapped on the motorway !!(n)
if in doubt get it changed ..........one less thing to worry about

littlepip17 you said

Hmm...is the 1.2 sx60 cylinder head a non-interference design then ?

yes, but , no offence to little pip but he works for main dealer and has only worked there for a very short time. many many people have had a belt got before the dealer recomended times, but the mk1 is so old not many take them to a main dealer to fix, so he wont have heard about it.
ff recomend 50k or 5 years for the 8v sooner if you do a lot of stop starts.
it maybe a safe engine, but a broken cam belt when on a bust motor way or 2 in the morning is not very safe

has anyone noticed how thick the 1.2 cam belts are getting on newer fiat models and the new design on tensioner like on the 1.4's i cant imagine one of those ever coming off

when I first got my punto the guy said it had never had a cam belt but as you may know mine has almost done 80k and is now 9 years old but I had a look and can still in fact see the direction arrows on it an some of the writing still remains so i'm not changing mine for this reason but my engine has never had any substantial oil leaks or dirt driving either so that's probably why

so I do agree 50k and 5 years is sensible considering the condition I have seen some of these old punto's in here on the forum and in the work shop

as for seeing older puntos there seems to be allot in cumbria I see at least 3 or 4 a week especially as the recall on brake pipes was introduced some time ago

thanks for responses
can anyone please tell me how much i'd expect to pay for the fan belt?and best place to get it from? i checked on ebay but could not find any.

Hi,
Presumably you mean the alternator belt; the fan is electric; belt is cheap; any motor factors ok; would agree with other views; change cambelt/tensioners every 5 years or 50,000 miles; if you slice the old cambelt along it's length with a stanley knife (remove spark plugs first!) you can then fit the new belt on to exactly match the teeth of half that's left on then cut that off as well presto no worry about timing marks etc
good luck
