Hi all

Got some Day Running lights the other day and having a bit of trouble wiring them up

the instructions tell you to attach the wires to the side light connector, meaning that they would only come on with the side lights...

however i want them to come on with the ignition so they are always on (like proper running lights)

read the haynes manual, and i can do it if i connect the wire directly off the igntion wire to the fuse box. (the yellow one???)

this would bypass the fuse box and the multitimer and the column switch (I THINK?)

Other idea is to wire it into the Cig Lighter, however this hasnt worked for a few months and the fuse is fine (F44 in Passenger Box)


HOW CAN I GET TO THIS WIRE. or does anyone have any other ideas..

Just wire it off the yellow Ignition Wire off the Ingition barrell/Key Barelle

BUT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!


I think at the moment its just easier to wire it onto the ignition. but i like the idea of that sensor

so it is definitely the yellow wire on the ignition barrel?

and dont worry, barry will be disconnected (y)
 
7.5 amps is probably too much for a dozen leds. What output are the lights?

I have 2 on a 12v powersupply - they draw less then 1.5Amps(max output of the adapter) and there 48 on each strip

So i would have easily thought a 1amp fuse would do the job just fine
But 1amp fuses are not easy to come by - but ebay does have some :)

3 amp are really easy to come by, so that would be my choice.

there are 24 LEDs on each of the 2 strips. used a muiltimeter and draw was a maximum of 1.2amp

I can easily get hold of a 3 amp fuse and a in line fuse holder from Maplin


Im definately ok using the yellow wire on the ignition barrel arent I? :confused:

I Would have thought so
but to play it safe you could add a relay in

So Yellow Iso to Pin 86
Pin 85 to Ground
Then have the LED Strips come off pin 87
and a live battery feed to pin 30 :)

I'd be curious tho if the whole ignition feed would go via the ground instead via the actual ignition system

Right.

so your esentially saying this;

A relay which is triggered by the Ignition ISO (Yellow) Similar a remote cable for a Sub/Amp

once the relay is trigger a 12v supply from the battery runs the lights, once ignition is off the lights should go off.

In theory the ground from the relay shouldn't be needed. once the ignition is off the supply from the ISO (yellow) will stop. Which in turn breaks the circuit for the 12v to the LED's. a ground surely would drain the battery when the circuit is off.

Usually I am 'Mr Relay', but in such a low ampage situation I wouldn't be bothered.

If you fancy, pop a switch inline too, will allow you to have them off during the summer.

Take a wire directly off the Yellow ignition wire have a inline switch and 3amp fuse, then take the wire into the engine bay to the LED's then earthed.

in my opinion it sounds a lot easier to setup and run, with the option to turn off if require (nothing to stop using that with a relay)

I guess that both are valid ways and neither will drain a battery seen as the yellow wire is only live when the ignition is on.

Only change I'd make would be to put the fuse inline first, almost as soon as its left the connector.

I was going to run the wire from the ignition through the passenger fuse compartment and have the inline fuse and switch in there, then route the wire into the engine bay. so it wont be immediately after the connection but relatively near.

Wasnt the Yellow wire =/ that was for the park lights, miss read the diagram

It was the blue one from the ignition.

Had a bit of trouble running the wire from the engine bay to the fuse box, all the gromits were full, managed in the end. =D

No comes on with the ignition regardless to if any other lights are on (y)

had a drive about and they didnt really show up on the road at all. might be aimed up a little bit high, so will adjust if needed.

the camera is slightly fecked so any glare messes up the sensor.

will get day time photos tomorrow. but all seems good with them. bar a little wire and direction adjustment:)
