Technical Is this the Gearbox Drain Plug?

Can anyone confirm whether this is the drain plug for the gearbox oil please? The picture in the Haynes manual looks a bit different so I'm a bit unsure

(Picture was taken from underneath the passenger side of the car.)

spot on, be careful when refitting ,sure i saw post on here where threads were stripped from plug when overtightened

yeh, that was me... it wasnt the threads tho, it was a split in the casing coming from the drain hole

fixed now tho

btw, be sure you use fiats recommended selenia 75w oil when you refill - it makes so much difference

how often should you change the gearbox oil?

I dont think any manufacturer reccomends it, but people do anyway.

Dont all oils loose viscosity (whats the word) over time?

yeh it can thin and becomes contaminated with small filings from the gears over time, which then cause the gears to wear even quicker.

Personally I would change gearbox oil on a remapped JTD like yours toad every 25k to keep the gearbox sweet

Changed mine while fitting my engine and the gears are so much smoother than they were before

what gearbox oil's would you recomend, as i changed from selenia engine oil to halfords fully synthetic and the car runs much better

i havent tried the halford one, but i tried several others and nothing is as smooth in the gearchanges as the selenia stuff.

Castrol SMX S - 75W 85

Was what it said was for the JTD in the Halfords book and works fine

Was this caused by overtightening? Any idea what the recommended torque is to tighten the drain plug to (haven't got access to the Haynes manual at the mo).
