New Mini Fiat für 2008: Piccolo bello
The rear engined micro car with only 2.65m in length is supposed to be a rival of the Smart City coupe – But with 4 seats and a sliding door
The first new development on that basis could be a microcar, which Fiat might realease instead of the originally planned retro style mini called Trepunio, which was scheduled to come out in 2007. While the Trepunio concept car with its 3+1 seats and 3.3m in length would’ve been based on the Lancia Y, this new Micro car will be shorter. With only 2.65m in overall length it could match the size of the next Smart ForTwo moels(Debut scheduled for 2007) but will have 4 seats(2+2) and come out by the end of 2008 the latest.
The engine arrangement is sure enough the same and will come closer to the former Fiat 500 than to the front engine concept of the Trepunio: 3 zylinder gasoline and diesel engines built in the rear of the car diagonally will transfer their power to the rear wheels. Storage space will be provided under the hood and on the backseats, which are mounted over the engine in the rear.
The height of 1.70m should provide enough space even on the rear seats, which are mounted in the car like bleachers, meaning they are in a higher position. The door concept reminds of the Peugeot 1007. But the small Fiat will only manage to get by with only one door, which is on the drivers side where it appears more important to the Fiat people. Their argument is as follows: The drivers door will be used more frequently anyway, and it also opens to the street side, where a conventionally mounted door can sometimes stop oncoming traffic. On the passenger side there will be a normal sideways opening door.
The new mini car will continue Fiats 500/600 tradition, but this time rather in a new modern way instead of a nostalgic way like the Trepunio concept. Fiat did not believe in the concepts success and thought it would, if would’ve gone into production, not to be a big seller. This new mini car on the other hand is hoped to sell as many as 100,000 or up to 150,000 units a year.
A condition for the new mini car strategy is though that the new Punto, scheduled to come out later this summer, will sell enough units to finance the development and production costs. The production of the new mini car will most likely then be in Poland.
