Hi guys, anybody had any probs with power steering?
Mine just completely failed whilst driving, first of all the battery light came on,then a few mins later, just as im going around a roundabout no steering!!I really could not move the steering wheel at all, very dangerous.
I pulled over, switched off,had a quick look under the bonnet, then restarted, and it was working again!!My local dealer is useless, they said,if its ok now,it should be fine, but i could be dangerous,as no steering at 70mph is bad news!!

Anybody got any advice?

You only loose power assistance, the steering still works and can still be used, its just a shock when you loose it. Take it back as there is a known connection problem on the positive battery terminal, which can be sorted in minutes.

That is serious, the steering packing up like that could be fatal and not just for you. I would go back to the dealer immediately and argue my case for an inspection of the steering and electrical system. If they fob you off again get onto Fiat UK straight away. I would guess a fault code could be stored somewhere now which may well indicate what the problem is, one of the Techies will be able to explain more when they show up next.

Just been back again,is there is no fault at all with the car, steerings ok,and theres no fault code stored, they said wait till it happens again, and drive it here! The steering does work, but its very hard if your moving slow, especially with the low profile 17inch alloys.

Does anybody have fiat UKs no?

Cant seem to find it myself, might just try a different dealer

If its a minor thing, then sure you might be able to live with it. But as others have pointed out, this is extremely dangerous and you could potentially be seriously hurt or killed because of this. What your dealer said to you is a classic example of 'I don't give a f about you or your car' attitude - simply outrageous and intolerable. I would demand a complete check of the steering system and do not take it back until they can proof to you what is wrong with it.

Its answers like that that give dealers a bad name. You have been fobbed off and as long as people accept being fobbed off the dealers will carry on doing it when it suits them. What is important in this case is safety, and in this day and age no-one ignores safety due to the legal issues that surround it. Go back to the dealer, ask to speak to the service manager, be assertive, explain the fault and emphasise your concerns about safety and the legal implications of driving a car on the road that you know could be faulty. Tell him you want your car inspected at the earliest opportunity due to the fact you consider it to be a serious safety related issue. If they still wont meet your demands, get in touch with their Paymasters and ask for their advice.

Both my mk2's have done this also, nice to see fiat have solved the problem:D .

Hello !!!! "Techy" here, is anyone listening or have i turned invisible? If you have no fault codes then the battery connector is the favourite cause.

I am no Techie.....(well I am in a way, but my particular field doesnt really relate to modern cars) but....if the battery connector was duff I can understand the warning light coming on however why did the steering take several mins to fail after the light came on and if the engine was running why couldnt the alternator provide the power to run the steering system. I dont for one instant doubt what you say but I am curious to know how and why.

At the risk of sounding sarcastic it sounds like its a very simple fault......and someone needs to let Mikeys dealer know about it.

Same thing happed to me Went to pull away in the car park at work nearly went through the bloody office window. Took it to dealers they could not find a problem thankfully it’s not happened again.

The systems on modern cars are voltage dependant, so if you have a high resistence (loose connection) then this causes problems. There is a multiconnector on the positive battery post with fusible links fitted, these connectors are not always 100% tight, which then can cause the epas system to shutdown due to an unstable supply. Because the system shuts down due to effectively power failure, the epas ecu does not record any errors, which is why a dealer cant find any codes recorded whilst using examiner.

Hi NumanR
This terminal problem would this be the likely cause of my power steering problem?

If I start my car and try to drive away straight away my power steering can take about 5 seconds to kick in. This mostly happens after Ive jumped back in the car to drive in my garage and I spend a few hairy moments trying not to crash into either side lol!

I just put it down to me trying to drive off too quickly but I need to book my GP in as it has developed an oil leak :( and if its a known fault I may as well get that looked at as well at the same time.
