Hi people, had my gearbox out recently and having refitted it cannot for the life of me get the gears to work again. I have a 2000 Sei sporting spi. Everything was absolutely fine before i took it out and changed nothing bar the clutch and engine mount, have connected the gear select connections and it seems i now have to lift the reverse gear thing to get it into fifth but the gear lever won't go over to first and second. If i adjust the reverse gear selector on top of the gearbox (if the main gear select on top of the gearbox is in a certain position the reverse gear select will go down into the gearbox and you can turn it to a different angle) it will select first to fourth but will not, without a lot of force, go into fifth and reverse. Completely baffling me. Only undone them and took gearbox out so why won't it re engage properly?

Help very much appreciated :(
 
What i think is called the reverse gear linkage has a rectangular shape which you would expect to fit the connector being as it has the same shape cut or moulded into it. Is there some sort of spacer that should fit in there? Don't recall one coming off.

Why did you undo the bolt instead of just releasing the balljoint?

If you look closely you'll see the base of the bolt has the square peg you are looking for to guarantee correct alignment. Just make sure the lever is seated fully when you reassemble.
 
Jim. I undone the bolt instead of releasing the ball joint because it seemed harmless. Fingers, is the download section actually marked Download section?

Having spoken to a Fiat mechanic i've broken the reverse gear selector (probably when i dropped the gearbox on the floor from about 8 inches). I've seen a gearbox online from a 2003 Sei. Does anyone know if the gearbox from a manual 2003 Sei will fit a 2000 Sei?
 
Got to be worth cracking it open to see what lurks beneath. As long as a load of bits don't come bursting out all over the place :s
 
You say you doubt that its broken, well i can't help but feel the same. Both the main gear selector and the other one must be synchronized some how. Im going to have a fiddle tomorrow after work and see if i can suss it out! When the gearbox was out i was moving the main gear selector around, like a new toy sort of thing, with a bit more fiddling i may get lucky :)

If it landed upside down that would be bad otherwise unlikely.

They should swap but Fiat parts are Italian, check eper.

Missed this bit. Sportings have a different gearbox to most/many/all? the other 1108 Sei boxes. So deep checking is in order.

It should be fairly obvious from the inner driveshaft mounts. All Sportings are the dry type (with "cups"), S and SX tend to be the wet type (as found on the 899).
 
I've just been reading another thread from about 5 years ago where someone else done what i did (Brooky) and it shows pictures of how you take the top cover off the gearbox and put the pin back in where it should be and line the gears back up, pop the slotted connector off the ball joint to attach to the pin then put it all back together and then NEVER ****ING TOUCH THE BASTARD ****ING THING AGAIN!
