The what battery? The normal battery looks fairly normal.

Sorry if I confused anyone, it's just that the battery looks much bigger than the one in my diesel but perhaps that is due to newer models being fitted with larger batteries for the Stop and Start.

I didn't know if the the multiair system required more battery power for operating the valve solenoids, certainly, a two cylinder engine designed with low friction materials and advanced fluid dynamics should be easier to turn over than a four cylinder engine so I wouldn't see any requirement for a higher capacity battery just for that.

Would the weight of the engine usually include the turbo? I would guess with the twinair being heavier (and of course smaller) that it would.

It sounds like we've been mislead. Most articles say that it it is 7kg lighter than the 1.2 as well as being more powerful, but these figures suggest that it isn't. I suspect that the non-turbo is 7kg lighter than the 1.2, but it is also a lot less powerful.

It still doesn't explain where the other 164kg come from. It weighs a lot more than the 1.4, so even with bigger brakes and battery etc. it still wouldn't add up.

Edit: I've just noticed that those figures don't look right. Maximum torque is supposed to be 145Nm @ 1900rpm IIRC.

well those are the engine manufacturers figures, perhaps it is slightly detuned in the 500 for eco or noise

why worry anyway? the proof is in the driving :cool:
 
The engine is lighter but not that much due to the fact you have a turbo, and balance shaft, plus the multiair unit, a vacuum pump etc etc. The real joy of this engine is the low down torque, and yes the peak torque is at a very low 1900 revs. The machining is very good and the whole engine is very well designed, both to reduce internal friction and reduce emissions. If you drive it you will not be disappointed!
 
I've found the answer to my initial question now. It weighs 930kg (got this from the handbook), which is the same as the 1.4. This is a lot heavier than I was expecting, but after reading something, I suspect that the weight Fiat keep talking about doesn't include the turbo. So the 65bhp one will probably be 7Kg lighter than the 1.2. It still seems like a very big increase though.

Does it really matter? As long as the car is economical that and the engine is good enough that's all that matters :)

Well it does matter for me (as well as being curious). My Panda tends to damage my driveway if I jack it up, but this never happened with my Seicento, which was a lot lighter. I could also push my Seicento in and out of the garage quite easily, but with the Panda I need to drive it. So I would love a car that weighed 750kg.
